thats a winner there Gav, damn you now I got to put ash LP on my want list !
Very, very nice. Love the subtle burst and great figuring of the Ash which has been highlighted well
Love how that top has turned out... the burst, the cream, the zebras all just work so well together. Awesome result.
Have you tried it with black/dark cavity covers?
Gav, you've got to be happy with this axe, simply stunning!
I may have to defer my SG-1F until the next GOTM!
@Wokka, @CSim, @Wierdy & @Andrew - thanks for the kind words guys. I've been playing her all day and I'm pretty damn stoked. A very nice axe to play. Need to film a sound test - tomorrow hopefully.
chers,
Gav.
Sweet axe Gav, one superb LP.
I hope it sounds sweet. Now hurry up with the sound demo!
Good stuff. The LP-1M I recently built is now my go to guitar. How good are these LP kits!
Another really sweet axe, Gav (is there no stopping him! :D)
... truly lovely 'burst, man, and the whole guitar just hangs together so well.
@Kane, @Andrew, @Scott - thanks guys. I'm certainly loving playing this beast. I'm trying desperately to find something I can play well enough for a demo. My sausage finger noodling just wont cut it!
cheers,
Gav.
magnificent - that is all...
Thanks @Stan :). I'll get on in @Bargey! Gunners is a good suggestion, maybe The Cult as well..
cheers,
Gav.
Hey gavin that looks the goods!!! Nice job
Just wondering if you've made any how to 'burst' threads on here beacuse your pro it. Or know if there is a guide on here on it? Cant seem to find one if there is
Cheers mate
Hey Dozey, have you checked out Gavs blog? It's pretty cool and he has a lot of info there about how hes done some of his stuff, the URL's in his Sig
Thanks Dozey,
Unfortunately there isn't a guide on the forum for bursting. I'm thinking of doing a video on my method for my next build. I use water-based Colortone dyes from Stewmac for my bursts which are a little easier to work with, but others have also achieved great results with Dingotone.
there are a few you tube video, such as this one:

Hope this helps.
cheers,
Gav.
Cheers for that guys. Ill get onto those blogs asap. I think ive watched most of the vids on youtube but the ones that are staining bursts are no where near as good as yours gavs!
Awww thanks man ;).
Cheers,
Gav.
Serious case of burst envy lol
Might have to get some blank sheets and practice, practice, practice
This is the technique I used, see 6th post down. I used colortone stains & tru oil on this axe.

It ended up like this (second post down)

Have a few practice runs on scrap and you'll soon get the hang of it
Nice job andrew looks great!
Hi gav
That guitar looks so good I don't know whether I am exited or s#%@scared to get the saw or something into the head stock. I have done the other prep work. I think I have GoofOffed the glue spots. You make it hard for us learners. I am going with colortone and TO on my LP-1MQ and wonder if you can tell me whether you diluted the dye when you used the different colors on the burst. If so what proportion? I am going to try to mix a light to medium burgundy red. G
Hey Greg, thanks for the kind words.
20-or-so builds ago, I was starting my first build right here like everyone else, so don't worry you'll have it in no time. :P. Are you using the concentrated dyes from Stewmac? Personally I use about 20 drops of concentrated colour in about 2cm of water at the bottom of my measuring cup (I have some pipettes to do this). All colours I dilute the same, just vary which drops go in.
What I would recommend, especially if you have the concentrated dyes, is to buy a few pieces of pine from the big green shed and try out your colours on that. Take photos of the 'wet' colours as they lighten as the wood dries (the colour comes back with clear coats). Keep mixing until you have a colour you love. Also practice your blending on the test pine too. After a while you'll work out how to apply the dye without creating a tide line. Personally I always do a first pass with clear water just to minimise tide line phenomenon. It really isn't as hard as it looks. I'm sure you'll do great!
cheers,
Gav.
Thanks Gav
Is am using the Stewmac colortone, says concentrated on the bottle.
You may have missed the photos on my build diary showing the bubbles caused by water on a supposedly very thin veneer. I was looking for glue spots. I am going to mix with metho( alchohol in US I think) to try and reduce the bubble risk.
PS(your only an hour away if I get into real trouble. HIHI.)
Cool, yep that's the same stuff I use. Yeah too many threads to keep up! Just read yours and can see what you mean about the bubbles. I would just be careful not to saturate the veneer too much. It does make it more of a challenge ;). Will keep up to date with your thread from now on! :)
cheers,
Gav.
