There's nothing to stop you from having a scratchplate as you first envisaged. You could fit a 'standard' one if you had pots and a jack socket with long enough shafts. Alternatively, like my Ibanez RG-08 has, you could cut bigger holes round where the knobs and jack socket go for the knobs to fit through.

But by now, your mental picture of what the guitar will look like has probably changed as well. Just a thought.

Appreciate the idea Simon, but this one will go without a pickguard.
Progress has been a bit slow but have managed to get the colour on the headstock. Thought it might be a good move to tape up around the inlay pieces while sanding the stain off.

While there is nothing wrong with the fretboard, got the impression it was too light compared to the body colour and would look better if it was darker. So I 'ebonised' it with some leather dye. Taped off the rosewood and applied two coats of poly to the rest of the neck. Then masked off the poly'd area (maple), leaving the rosewood exposed and applied two coats of dye. Should mention this was after replacing the fret dots with white MOP dots surrounded by abalone rings (from Aus MOP supplies).

Finding it a bit hard to get a good pic of the inlays that show them off well, this is a close up of one.

Was hoping to be starting assembly by now, oh well slowly slowly, get there eventually.

Grant , this is a great looking guitar mate. I love the headstock logo, the shaping and the colour choices.
As for building a scratchie, you are pretty much there. I am starting one myself, and cheating a bit by getting DB to make me a through neck. I thought a neck through design would make life easier than trying to align neck pocket, neck tang, and pup routs.
This is going well, looks really nice, and when you take the next step, you'll build a beauty

Cheers Stan (congrats on GOTM, and Chuck also, guess I missed out on purple month)
Neck through build I hadn't even considered, more to ponder.
Neck is on and have fitted the bridge bushes and string ferrules, shielded pup cavities with conductive paint and copper taped the control cavity.

Might check frets are level and sort out if needed before installing pups and wiring. Full length pics, a little dark but you get the idea.

Super customisation work on this little beauty. Busting to see the full effect when she's done.
I'd call this a very sexy guitar indeed - top stuff.

as always Grant you build a top quality axe, love the shaping and staggered string through holes, this is going to be a classy axe when done. Love the deep red colour too !

Looks very slick, that first pic is just fantastic.
