In the meantime, thinking about the controls again. I'm confident I can 4 four pots in the control cavity with all the wiring - which means I can still do 2 vol and 2 tone.
However, the issue becomes the knobs.
Speed knobs look nice, but I think they'd be annoying that close together:

The plan for this axe is black hardware, so black dome knobs (going unused from one of my bass kits) would suit and leaves a bit more room between the knobs:

That's some options, so reckon I'll be drilling the two extra holes equally spaced - after the grain filler probably.

Noticed a small crack in the neck pocket the other day too.

Hopefully when it's all glued together that won't matter.
Considering doing another grain filler run after it's glued. (actually considered not doing any filler until after it's glued but it would get cumbersome.)

And shaped the headstock.
Attachment 4729
Went for the classic shape. Coping saw then filed even.

Nice progress Sam, headstock is shaping up. The control knobs do seem a tad close, but I suppose that could be a matter of taste. Looking good though.
-
id consider making the control cavity a bit larger, and speaking to pabs about a custom sized cover for the back

Now I'm thinking I need a switch. Considering doing two stacked pots in the original holes and a switch in a new hole in the middle. Stacked pots would be vol and tone for the respective pickups and the switch would flick between neck, both and bridge. Seems to me it mirrors the pickups nicely. Feels intuitive. Unlike some guitars I've seen.

So I grainfilled and sanded back the body today.
Attachment 4743
What I'm wondering now is about those bits that are great swathes of pink.
Do they need more sanding or are they where the body dipped? - since I've already been over it with a sanding block it would have levelled the area.
-
What grit are you using, Sam?
With these contoured bodies I sand without a block and when fillers are being used, generally I sand with 320 grit.
Any coarser and you may pull the filler out of the pores.
The areas that look clean are probably sanded correctly.
Hold it at an angle to the light and look for pits and hollows, if you see any you may want to apply more filler.
-
The body is contoured? Seems flat to me.
I've been sanding with a block and 240 grit.
I'm not against going over it with another round of filler.

Sam the contouring is the carved top, it has an arch to it
