Oh yeah, that's looking the business and then some. Nice work!
Very nice!
Lookin good!
Thanks everyone. Ive just blown in the darker areas - Ill get pics shortly. Got some great tips on gun pressure from one of our spray guys who I am now going to call "yoda" then Ive done another big coat of sealer which ill flat back again this evening (as i actually have to do some WORK today!!) then its binding scraping this evening too then remask for tomorrow clearcoats and the weekend to dry.
I've just read through this diary. It feels like two minutes since the kit arrived but also feels like and AGE! Ive learned so many things already with everyones help and I know I have further to go as Im about 2 3rds the way through and things WILL go wrong from here. i have to finish the back and sides. completely start and finish the top flake and clearcoat. then tackle the wiring installation and then finish the frets etc etc.. and install the hardware. i'm loving it so far!
Just in case no-one's mentioned it yet, always try and mask off or fill with newspaper the f-holes and pickup cavities, so that you don't get spray on the inside of the guitar. It won't harm it, but it doesn't look great. Natural wood is the standard look for the inside of hollow-bodied guitars, and you can normally see the back through the F-holes pretty well. Also, accidental overspray into the cavities will be patchy and rough-looking which obviously looks worse than if it were a uniform coating.
One alternative is to then deliberately spray or paint the inside black, which can work quite well. But it's easier to crumple up newspaper (some people poke balloons through the holes then inflate them) and stuff it in as it can be pulled out again fairly easily. You just need something to stop spray reaching the inside of the back, so it doesn't need to be totally full inside the body.
Yep I like that idea too, very smart
Final sand of sealer and removed the masking to see what I need to do to the binding. Most the mess came off with scraping (the edge was not as tight apparently as I thought. But here’s also some staining as the binding has tiny crack in it apparently. I didn’t want to use thinners on this as it would melt the plastic but a little diluted nail varnish might be the answer. If not I can live with it. It’s one of those things.
Next remasters and get the satin clearcoats on the back sides and neck. This will probably be Monday now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a68a29e056.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c8aa7f0471.jpg

Are you using the behlen sealer mate?
That looks fantastic! I had the same issues with the binding but I don’t mind, I think it makes it look older.
Yes that’s what I was thinking. I can live with it.

No idea. Is the standard cellulose sealer we use on the jukeboxes at work. I ended up using this and the stains we use too. So much easier then the water based ones. There’s at least 3 coats of sealer rubbed back to try and smooth out the grain. Then sealed again and then blown in with a darker stain. I can find out the name of the product if you wish.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b2542a3114.jpg one of the top unmasked. Before I scraped the binding. You can see where we had leaks. It’s a good job the top is going to be painted.

First coats of primer going on... then lots of flatting and recoating.

Can't wait to see the finished product. Looks fantastic so far.
So exciting. Got more sealer primer on this morning and it’s looking smooooooooth. Got a tack coat on of the solar gold. Didn’t order any additional paint. Still have loads in my test aerosol so just need to build it up slow and so it’s not patchy. I have some gamma gold too so might even darken the edges.
I don’t think you see much anyway once the flake is on there.

Outrageous! Great job mate. Your patience in the preparation stage is paying off. Going to be brilliant when finished.
Hope it comes with sunglasses too.
Few more coats of flake

Just to put a few words to the images above. Yesterday morning I started with the filler /sealer combo. it took at least 4 coats to hide the grain (didnt have grain filler but the stuff i DID have was meant to do this too...) we don't bother much about the grain on our jukeboxes so its proabably ok for that. Anyway i managed to get it as flat as i could the stuck on a 3 or 4 coats of house of kolor solar gold. I WAS going to buy some for my gun but I still had 3/4 of an aerosol from my testing panels so i just used this. it looks quite patchy until you get the 4th coat on then it looks really nice and flat..
When it dried it did show a few areas of grain - but its fine. and these will be filled with flake anyway.
then it was onto the flake. I mixed dark gold flake with a tiny bit of Roth Surfer silver (as i thought this might make a little different type of sparkle.) then ive layed on at least 4 coast of this until its really thick and covered. I might do another coat or two this afternoon as ive still got some in the gun and i hate waste.... then il let it have a really good dry at least overnight or maybe even over the weekend. the flake carrier is thick stuff so im worried about it being really soft underneath.
then its kandy coats (again I have almost a full can of this so again Ill use areosol) then Ill have to remask everything for the clearcoats.
I want the 2k clear to overlap the binding and slightly over the edge of the lip of the body so Ill remask it all for this.. then its clear & Flat until the cows come home.
I'll probably not polish and buff it yet. Ill play it and see what its like in a month or 3.. want it to cure really well before all that palava...
(soundtrack for most of the spraying was freddy king!)
That’s looking AMAZING BuffaloGhost, and I lmao when I compare it to my own foray into gold glitter.

Flakes done. Leaving to give it a good old dry out then I’ll kandy tomorrow.

Ok so it had to happen..... I messed up. I went to do a quick kandy tac coat before leaving for the day.... picked up the wrong can....... (a label had transferred onto this one)
Gamma gold.......
In my haste I wiped it off and now ruined the flake. Luckily I just did the head stock so....
Now tomorrow the plan is to wait until it’s dried and hardened off. Then flat it off, recoat gold, reflake then kandy... with the right colour.
I’m such a duffus.

You duffus! :D
Totally. There wasn’t even that much swearing!! Just me looking at the can and thinking... that doesn’t look right. Just glad I did the headstock and not the whole body.
Should be easy to fix. I just need to walk away tonight.

This is going to be rad. Big flake sparkle finish is definitely on my to do list.
And the gamma gold will always be in the truss rod cavity just to remind you.
It’s masked in there but yep. A tiny bit will be there to remind me of what an idiot I am.
Anyway. Dejavu.... back to wood and primer.

Been getting into the factory at 7am to use the booths. I also love an hour and a half away from work so I can’t say I’m not dedicated.
Then throughout the day. Nipping in and doing a recoat or too.
