So tonight i sprayed the first coat of sealer primer to the body.

Next i reshaped the headstock, i grew to hate the shape over the last few months. Too big, i want it more streamlined, plus its the exact replica of the small horn on the body. Matches well.
Before and after photos.

Welcome back Nitro
So time for a good sand to see what im working with. Lots of little imperfections show up with the first sand, scratches, bumps irregularities etc.
Good sanding and a few more coats of primer should do it.

Now time for more coats of primer, them a good sand and then im ready for a thin coat of body filler.
Attachment 39456 Attachment 39457 Attachment 39458
So while i was waiting for the body filler to dry i looked for my pots of stain for black which i had decided to stain the fretboard with and came upon RED MAHOGANY!
I couldnt go past it, didnt even get to the black, i had to try the mahogany.
4 coats of stain later, not just on the fretboard but all the neck i had fallen in love. BLACK AND RED, the perfect marriage, at least in my opinion. And it was a dark shade not a cherry red, will match with my theme, dark, mean and classy. At least i hope so....
Then i had to put on 1 coat of poly just to check the depth of the stain....yumm. Perfeck!
Should look great after 20 coats or so.

looks great! love it.
Nice colour!
Thanks guys, thats the thing with guitar building, your plans can go out the window at any second.
Cheers guys. I recon the white pearl fret dots will match well. In the meantime a few complications, as usual.
A resand of the headstock to eliminate small crossgrain scratches and a primer undercoat paint reaction that will need resanding on the body. Will post pics later.
It's always something with these things!Quote:

So scratches all sanded, not worried about the stain and clear as it will act as a sealer.

SECOND PROBLEM....... looking closely at the neck i noticed a dent in it... bummer.
Attachment 39808 Attachment 39809
TWO SOLUTIONS.... wet cloth and steam iron or wood dust and glue. It was easier as i had sanded the stain and clear off.
I had to use both, steamed it first then used a mixture of stained wood dust and wood glue, a light sand and a restain, worked a treat, whew, thank goodness.

So just went and checked the body, its had about 3 coats of primer a fine fill body filler and 3 coats of undercoat, thats when i had a paint reaction, problem is i didnt know if it was from the filler or undercoat although i had my suspicions.
Attachment 39815 Attachment 39816 Attachment 39817
The reaction on the timber hanger i think, was from heavy buildup.
So sprayed another mist coat of grey undercoat on the reacted area, it crinkled up straight away. Well there goes the idea of multiple mist coats.
I scraped some off and a lot of filler came with it so i sealed the rest with white primer. That was ok, no reaction.
So grey reacts to white not the other way round. Will change the undercoat me thinks.
Attachment 39818 Attachment 39819
So fixed the crackle problem, incompatible spray bases. I used a high build acrylic primer and no probs this time. Will now build up the coats.
Attachment 39839 Attachment 39840
Next the tedious task of building up coats of wipe on poly to the neck and fretboard, between 20 and thirty i hope. Only 6 so far and 1 on the fretboard.
Attachment 39841 Attachment 39842 Attachment 39843
Attachment 39844
Twelve coats on the neck, 5 on the fretboard. Sanding with 400 between every 3 coats now.
Body had 3 mysterious dents in it, funny how they appear out of thin air. Another fill and sand, then re undercoat.

So ordered chrome tuners with white pearl tuning pegs. WHITE... I DONT THINK SO!
Tell me guys do they look white to you?
Attachment 39988
Oh yea, i wrote back to the guy saying he sent me grey, he replied.....
Dear Mitchell,
We are sorry to hear that the color of the item you received is not as described. However, please note that the actual item may look a little bit different from the picture due to lighting effects, monitor's brightness or contrast settings. Considering that the color does not affect the function, we would like to partial refund 3 USD to you as compensation (instead of asking you to return it for exchange or full refund), hence we can resolve the problem quickly and more efficiently. Please let us know if this will be ok with you.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused
So ive got about 5 sets of tuners in different colours and finishes and a set of tuning knobs in real white pearl.
So after dismanling all of them i found a set with similar hole and screw sizes. About .02 too small. So i filed down the tuner spline and gently tapped them on. Perfect, the screws fitted perfectly as well. So now i have my own customised tuners with oversized tuning pegs. YES!

The last picture is a comparison of the ones i made and the one from ebay. White my A#*e!
Mix & match!
I love it when this works (sometimes it just doesn't). Adds to the uniqueness of an instrument.
So back to it....still working on the neck, have about 15 coats on the back and head. Fretboard needs another 5 or 6 then it will be done.

Next a quick sand of the body and 3 coats of a G.M Holden colour, Phantom Mica, black with minute flecks of red, blue and green.
Then a week to dry, very wet here at the moment, inspection then more coats before the final 2k finish.

I've missed seeing the start of this build. All very interesting.
Can I ask if you've checked whether two of those large-button tuners will fit side-by-side on the headstock when the buttons are parallel with the headstock? From the photos it looks like it could be a very tight fit and there's a possibility they could clash and you can't turn them. You never know what angle they'll end up at when the guitar is in tune.
Yea all is good. But i want opinions on doing something different, putting 3 aside on a 6 inline headstock using oversized pegs.
Pretty radical but i like different.
SO DOES THIS LOOK GOOD OR IS IT CRAP? ALL CRITICISM EXCEPTED AND NEEDED. THANKS
Attachment 41015 Attachment 41016 Attachment 41017
Btw, they are not going on this neck but the red one pictured above, couldnt fit them as it is still wet.
Personally, I wouldn't do the large buttons on my guitar. I find tuning is a real PITA if the button don't have enough space between each other, and I have small hands and fingers. I would imagine someone with sausage fingers, the difficulty would increase exponentially.
BTW, I am in no way implying that you yourself have said sausage fingers...
Too wrong mechanically.
With normal tuner orientation, the string tension pulls the string post so that the gear at its base is pulled against the worm gear on the button shaft and minimises any slack or wear on the gears.
Reverse this, and the gears are pulled apart by string tension, so you end up with more backlash, and the tuners become looser and looser as time goes by. It might work for a while when the tuners are new, but with use, you’ll have three dodgy tuners quite quickly.
