nice touch Fred love it !
Yep , that works
I reckon that's it:

Now to do some sanding...
very nice Fred, sounds like a plan, sand that and it will look awesome from the back of the axe
The neck tenon was a bit too long and was blocking the neck pickup, so that got fixed today with the saw:

All good now:

nice fix Fred, I have found the same problem with the SG-1F kit. I put my neck through the bandsaw to chop out a small block, that was nerve racking !
I don't have a bandsaw so did it with the handsaw and removed the slice softly with a chisel. All under control! :-)
Now back to sanding...
I saw the mitre box in the pic Fred. I still can't believe those 3 humbucker rings fit !
this is going to be a monster
I was finding the fretboard rosewood too light and brown, so I used the same trick than on the Star Wars ST and tinted it with black keda dyes.
Quite happy with the results.

After first coat:

And second coat going on:

I'm going to seal it with a very thin coat of wipe on poly. Don't want the black to tint my fingers when I play!
Also grain filled the body today.
I mixed some hardwood and ebony timbermate, and added some of the magenta and violet ink I'm planning to use.
The idea was to get some purple in the grain.

For now it's looking very 'old lady' purple, but most of it will be sanded off anyway

looking good Fred
Personally I'd avoid putting poly on the fretboard if you can help it. I'd have first tried lemon oil on the board as it looked quite dry, and it could have gone a lot darker without staining. But just try letting the board dry and see how well fixed the stain is. If it's designed for leather, then you wouldn't expect it to come off easily and get all over people's clothes. There may be some loose stain initially, but rub some lemon oil over it with a cloth a few times. The board should go darker still, and rubbing should take off any loose stain. If its still leaving black marks after then rubbing with a dry cloth, then's the time to think about sealing it. Leave it a week or so after applying any lemon oil to let that sink in well and allow the poly to stick,
But it's going to be a bit of work to get the poly finish nice and flat. I'd be tempted to use a very thinned solution so that it penetrates and seals the surface of the wood rather than sits on the top in a thicker layer.
Thanks Simon... but the poly got on before I read your reply... it's a very thin coat of poly so we'll see how it goes after I've sanded it smooth.
In the meantime I've now sanded the body after applying timbermate. My tinted timbermate gave it a very slight pink shade and the body should be ready to tint now.

I've played with different mixes of the magenta and violet inks:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d2c9fd897b.jpg
I'm thinking I'll go with the one on the left. 2 parts magenta for a part violet.
Eagerly waiting to see pics of the 1st stain coat?
I'm sure it's all nice and violet now and he's just letting it dry before taking any pictures. Or else it's all gone horribly wrong and he's crying into his beer. But I'm betting on success.
Haha! No... it's not tinted yet...
I wanted to spray the headstock face black first.
I want to have the solid black all nicely sprayed before I tint the rest of the headstock. I've taped all around but I'm sure some paint will go under the tape and I'll be able to sand the sides clean if I haven't stained the neck yet.
And as I'm thinking I'll tint body and neck together to ensure I get the same colour I've got to wait... patience patience... it's hard to wait! 😉
Here's where we're at:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...de7047b82d.jpg
Also I'm still not sure if I should go all purple, purple with black burst around, purple surround with black centre (reversed burst), or a mix of these... (black surround and centre and purple between)... decisions decisions!
You don't have any veneer to worry about, so you can go with a very wet stain if you decide to go sunburst to help get a better, softer blend. Unless you spray the burst on, or are very experienced at bursting with stain, it's a bit hit and miss as to how good and how consistent a blend you'll get. If you go single colour, then you know it will look good. Staining a burst has risks. Or you could stain the purple but spray the black.
Decisions, decisions!
I would suggest trying a few bursts on test pieces of wood. As Simon said, wetter dye makes it easier to blend, and you'll pick up the knack of blending with a few trials. My 2c.
cheers,
Gav.
either way mate the magenta and black will rock
Got back into working on the SG today... finally!
Started by mixing my inks, started with 3x parts magenta for 1 part violet but found it too dark on my sample, so added about another part of magenta:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...947321bf9a.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b3f710e02f.jpg
And I got into it:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fda5c99015.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...13f5ddc07b.jpg
No burst at this point... I am thinking I'll either try to add on top by wiping a diluted darker mix, or I'll see if my Preval spray still works and I might try and spray a dark burst around the edges...
Sounds like something I'll gave to test on scrape wood first!
Nice colour Fred looks good
Very nice indeed! I love the headstock shape, very cool done!
Great colour
Ah, purple! I know Stan and I approve after our purple GOTM exercise in January - looking good Fred!
Absolutely , this purple axe is highly approved, nice look. That headstock shape really suits the SG, great job
Cheers guys!
Pretty happy with the colour so far, took a photo in the sun where it looks more magenta:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c830322631.jpg
Now debating whether I should add a black burst, a dark violet burst, or no burst...
Might sit on that for a week to see...
looks great the colour in the sun Fred. Why have you plugged the tailpiece bush holes ? will this have a wrap around bridge or a Bigsby tremelo ?
Think it will look fine as it is or with a dark burst edge might even look cooler
I got an X Trem bridge from Guitar Fetish, pic on that post: http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...d.php?p=117148
The right hand side hole is completely hidden but the one on the left will be partially visible.
I need to spend some time to try and blend the plug in a bit more. It's tassie oak and it didn't take the colour as well as the mahogany around it.
Looking good Fred.
I reckon one more coat of the same colour to add some depth and soak into the grain pores should be all it needs.
I vote black burst. it would look killer with the purple
A bit of a dry fit to check how it looks with the colour:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...eb2707082a.jpg
The jury is still out on the pickguard... we'll see how it looks once shiny 😎
Just added a second coat of ink:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0f56b306f4.jpg
this and my V are going to be twin cousins :D Purple and gold!
looks very nice Fred, I am jealous and now want a triple bucker SG ! There is some nice grain in the mahogany. Never thought purple and gold can work so well ! Nice hardware !
@ Dedman can't wait to see your FV too !
I've been slowly darkening the edges with a mix of my core colour to which I'm adding some black and or violet ink, and then dilute with water.
I'm thinking that by slowly adding some darker pigment I should be able to build a kind of burst.
Working ok so far:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a586adffa6.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bb7ebf79b8.jpg
It's quite subtle but I don't want to go too dark I think.
Looks like a shadow tone and really like it.
