This just blows my mind
So received the Duesenberg wraparound this week and will work a treat in regards to the width but have to reduce the hole size to suit the smaller post ferules (9mm).
Now just need to work out how to paint it black.
Off the hook. Completely off the hook. You are giving me so many wild eyed ideas beyond my pay grade and skill set that it's just not funny.
Wonderful work!
Noice werk Vh, veeeeery noice.
My side light fibreoptic cord turned up and is a lot more flexible than the standard so was able to bend easily. Puttied the cord into the top part of the guitar and once dry wound the second strand into the fretboard and taped in place.
then glued the fretboard on. Cut the replacement veneer and put a small slot so that I could pull the cord out so it wont be damaged during gluing. Now waiting for neck to dry so I have a clamp or two to fit the veneer.
Now that fretboard is on, did a quick light test. Using the fretlight setup just held the two cores in the light source and checked how well the inlays lit up. A little underwhelming but only did a real quick sand and polish (10secs) of the ends of the fibres so with better polishing may improve the light source a bit. Also the alignment of the cords to the diode will be better once setup properly. Might drop into Jaycar on weekend and see if can swap out to higher lumen diode.
Will definitely need to thin the MOP a fair bit to get any of the light-source to come through.
Looks good! :)
Unfortunately, the more you thin the MOP, the weaker the colours get. Just be careful on the thinning process and keep trying it at regular intervals. A brighter diode will certainly help.
Was originally going to fretlight the side dots but with the work involved in the inlays went for a luminous side dot instead.
Found some luminous powders on Ebay as couldn't find any premade red ones. Mixed with some standard 5 minute areldite and then dripped and pushed the material into the holes.
How long do they hold a glow?
The description on eBay said 6hrs so probably ten minutes. Will do some testing once the necks done. And if they don't really glow will still be coloured so all good.
Good one Tony, should look great day or night.
I looked into glow in the dark stuff too for the Swampy Tele but ended up doing the shiny metallic look instead.
6 hours is ambitious and hope it lasts longer than ten minutes.
Cheers, Waz
On the weekend finally got a chance to continue with this build. Test fitted the neck and fits really well and tight, just a tweak required on the outer end of the pocket. starting to come together. Tonight started to fret the board and
then this happened.
So far have resisted the urge to test my arm.
the inlay has sunk in a bit and cracked at the 12th fret.
Will have to attempt a super glue repair and see if I can get the inlay back in shape.
If that is not successful will pull the 11th fret and the inlay and epoxy fill and fit a new inlay.( Pabs made some spares)
That's freaking hard core Tony! It looks awesome with the neck and body assembled.
Edit: Bugger about the inlay.
Yes, a real shame about the inlay cracking.
Yeah, bummer alright. Looks like shrinkage where it has cracked?
Hopefully the trusty super glue saves the day. Good to hear you have a spare available as a backup.
To bad about that crack!
So coming up on just over two and a half years and I think am ready to have another go. ( still a bit peed off)
Previous inlay and the fretboard pieces weren't recoverable so new plan.
Will use some zpoxy to fill around the optic fibre once I get it back in the right spot to give a good base then insert the replacement inlay and either inset some small ebony pieces or just black epoxy.
Also some of my frets have popped which indicates they weren't bent enough when fitted so some will have to be replaced.
If all else fails will have to either strip the fret board or make a new neck
Just keep going. You'll get there in the end.
