Well my 30 days of sanding got halved as I've had a cold the last week so...not much work and plenty of sanding time :)
Time to apply Dingotone Custom Colour: Rosewood! This is after the first coat. I've tested a coat on an off cut of maple just to see how it takes as I am very very tempted to do the whole guitar in a Rosewood colour.
After Timbermate Natural but before DT

After first coat of DT Rosewood.

Lovely colour, i like it, i also used the Timbermate natural on my Baritone, it doesnt seem to detract from the natural grain like some deeper colours do.
Not much to report.... finished sanding the neck to 400. Applied first coat of Dingotone neck coat (no stain on the neck the grain in the maple is fantastic.)

G'day mate, your Tele headstock looks just like mine. Did you download a template or just free handed it? I downloaded some off the net and used one labelled "50's, 60's, 52 AV & 52 AV Special, James Burton Standard, Nashville Deluxe"
Amazed at how many variations there are and the oh so subtle differences between each one.
Geez, that rock maple takes some sanding to take off all the rough bits doesn't it. I also had to cut one for the J Bass too and just finished that off this morning. Glad that part of the build is now done.
Bang on the money waz. same template.
Yeah the Maple is hard! I used a jig saw, and a 180 flap disk on my cordless drill to get the rough shape, then hand sanded, 180, 220, 240, 320 and 400.
When I was on the 320, my older kid (3.5yrs) tried to kill the younger one (1.5yrs) (for the 15th time that day:eek:) so I had to drop the neck and run.......dinged it up......sigh.....back to 220, 240, 320 then finally 400.
Love the DT rosewood colour. Great choice. It's popped the grain really beautifully!
cheers,
Gav.
The color looks great - can't wait to see more.
Ok so the new pickguard required me to fill the predrilled PBG holes. glued toothpicks, cut the sanded with the Brendan patented eraser sander!

Ready then for 2nd stain coat of Dingotone custom Rosewood!

See you next Saturday!
Going fishing or camping, or both?
Gorgeous colour...
Third application of the stain coat and the second for the DT neck finish on the neck (no stain).

Can I just say I am seriously impressed with the neck finish coat. even after one application (and a little over a week drying in good conditions) The neck is seriously playable, its super smooth and extremely slick. Its making me seriously reconsider any other neck finish.
Probably see you in another week.
Looks great. Yes agree with the neck finish it comes up a treat.

looking delicious!
Looking good Andy. Amazing how you can gain fill and sand super smooth an Ash body yet once stained it looks like it needs more filler if chasing a smooth all over finish as this is what I have discovered on my J Bass build and yours seems to have a similar appearance too.
That Rosewood stain is amazing, I am stoked as to how nice it looks on the Ash..
As it cures the colour should deepen a bit more..
Think we might have to add this colour to the catalogue :)

Yeah I dropped it!
no amount of swear words can explain the way i feel right now.
Thinking of keeping going as it is. if anyone has a miracle cure for this let me know.
I expect the answer will be to sand it back and restain.
That's no good :( Looks like a chip has come out of it. I would be thinking something along the lines of glueing the chip back in with titebond stained with same top coat colour. It may hide the damage to some extent. Other forumites may have some better ideas... In the meantime I would put the axe down, locate the chip and walk away from it for a bit. That will give you space to gather your thoughts and the plan of attack for it.
bugger Andy, as Ponch has suggested see if you can locate the chip. Otherwise I'd match the colour best you can with Timbermate and fill it and only do a local sand back and re-stain
must be national swear day with the drop, TonyW's pickup wind fail and DB's LP neck getting loose on the router !
I would tear the place apart looking for that chip
Sorry guys I should have explained. Its not a chip, its indented.
I should have also explained....the reason why i'm not huddled rocking in the foetal position is because I got my new kit tonight ;)......will start another build diary soon.
wow the body must have fallen on a sharp edge. Doubt the iron on damp cloth will get that dent out. Think the only option is to fill it with Timbermate or you have just started the first stage of the relic process.
Is the dent on the front or back face ? looks like its toward the bottom edge ?
What's the new kit you scored ?
You have a rapid increase of GAS mate ! hahah
Bummer. Hope it is on the back otherwise it may just be the beginning of the battle scars........onwards and upwards with the accidental home baked relic!
My neighbor would say she could hear me praying for rain if i did that to my guitar, i feel your pain mate.
I have got a TL1 kit but am unsure about drilling holes for the string-thru body setup. Am I correct to assume that I can avoid this by using the bridge in the kit as a "top-loader" bridge, thus avoiding scary hole drilling?
Hi Juddernaut, yes the supplied tele bridges the strings enter from behind the bridge plate so no need for string through holes.
Maybe after a couple of builds you can attempt a string through - I think they look mega sexy and probably have more sustain
thanks Wokka, yes I agree that a string-thru definitely look better but a man has gotta know his limitations....
I assume I can always change to string-thru later.
Hi Juddernaut, we better not thread jack Andy's build diary but yes easy to convert the PBG bridge to a string through bridge
No worries Wokks and Judders. As you would have seen though I managed the string through and it was my first time. I used that $30 drill guide thing and a heap of practice on scrap. If your really after a string through, I say go for it. just practice until you feel confident. My plan B was have a go before I did anything major...if i stuffed it, just plug the holes and paint it solid.
As it turns out i didn't need to.
yes Andy you did a great job of the string through and some good advice for Juddernaut
Update
I've decided the ding can stay. If i sand it back the edge is going to look wonky. If I fill it, I take the risk that the patch will look worse than the ding. It's important to me that I finish this guitar in DT. What the heck, its on the back, the build is only for me, the colour is dark enough to hide it and I'm not trying to win any awards with it.
Its been a week again and the humidity has been nice in Brisvegas, so it was time for another coat of DT.
The last stain coat had dried with patches of gloss, so I gave it quick light sand with 400.
Attachment 10373
And the final stain coat has cone on. Its still wet but you can tell that the stain has "matured".
Attachment 10374
I may give this one a bit longer as storms are predicted this week. but nevertheless it will be on with the intensifying coat!
The neck got another thin dose of neck finish.
Attachment 10375
I think thats three neck coats in all. I know that's enough for DB, but I'll see how this one dries.
Looking good.
Shame about the oversized neck humbucker route they cut into all these kits considering most will have the traditional single coil PUP as that complicates things if you want to have a naked top with no scratch plate. Same on both my Tele & J Bass and would have preferred to go 'Naked' to show off all the grainy goodness just like yours has.
New Update
Neck was peppered with dust particles....damn particles...not sure if you can see them in the pic.
Attachment 10584
0000 Steel wool applied gently, wiped clean
Attachment 10585
new coat of DT final neck coat applied.....oops didn't take a pic, but she looks sweet.
The body wont be taking any more stain. gentle sand with 2000 grit to even out and first intensifying coat applied.

Attachment 10587Attachment 10588
Looks good when wet. I think i accidentally applied too much. We'll see after a week.....or two....hmmmm
Oh man that's looking fantastic. Can't wait to see her all assembled. That rosewood is just awesome.
cheers,
Gav.
