Arzi, you are wrong mate, this is a worthy contender for GOTM, it's a very slick looking bass.
As for the headstock, i fixed a les paul with tha totally snapped off headstock, essentially using nothing but titebond and i play it daily. i appreciate that a bass has a lot more tension on it, but a good titebond join will be stronger than the timber around it.
first time i have seen one of these kits done, what a great look, nicee job

Oh this is GOTM material for sure! Very nice.

This is amazing. I love the curve of the top edge before the binding on the body, very unique and simply stunning.
-
Oh blast!
The easiest fix for that crack is to take the hardware off, sand off the finish and grab some thin CA glue that will wick through that crack.
Slap a clamp on for ten minutes then start the re finishing.
-
looking choice Arzi but have to agree with DB, need to glue that crack in the headstock before you put string tension on.
Build it looking fantastic so far, on the home stretch and I would definitely enter it the next GOTM
EDIT 3000 POSTS ARE UP FOR YOU DB, WELL DONE

Another great looking bass there Arzi.

I'm not the biggest fan of binding, but that looks great. I was wondering if the binding is translucent enough that if it was backed with and el strip of some kind would any light get through and whether the inverter or el strip involved would produce too much interference?
-
Thanks guys
I think I'll fix this wirh a glue and think of my options. Taking off the finish at this point is a big thing for I can't get the same color for sure. Maybe I can find a way to hide the crack with some kind of decor to put on top of it...
-
thats a possible option Arzi. Fill the crack with CA thin glue then maybe you can put a logo over it to hide it.
-
Hi
Got the headstock fixed. Put some tape on sides of the crack, filled it with running superglue using a needle (drop by drop). Then popped off the ferrules and it sealed itself. Widened the holes abit to prevent it from cracking again and I'm back in action.
Soldered the wiring too and it works. Tomorrow it's stringing time... :)

nice one Arzi glad you are back on track to get it to playing status very soon

Hi
So I strung her up (terrible way to describe the operation...) ...
Bone nut filed, truss rod adjusted, intonation adjusted. Put DÁddario´s half rounds on it cause I wanted more comfortable strings but not all flats - wanted to keep some of the rounds´sound. Very nice strings by the way.
The Action on E-string is about 2,5mm at 12:th fret so not bad at all. The neck feels very comfortable and actually better than my 38mm jazz now that I´ve played it. Don´t have to squeeze so much when pressing two strings at the same time with my left.
The preamp works well - although have to put the bass almost off to get the higher tones to come through.
The coil split is wonderful - I can get very different tones just by flipping the switches and blending the two pups. I love it! And talking about low end - this one has more bottom than any of my other basses.
I left the crack on the headstock as it is for now. It doesn´t look too bad and I have plenty of time to decide what I wanna do with it. Just have to design and make the trussrod cover.
Here are some pics of it all playable:
Had some golden screws on these also:

So far I´m very pleased on how this one came out. Only power tools I had were battery operated drill and a dremel. :)

That looks pretty special Arzi, very well done.
-
That looks awesome Arzi. I wish I could give that one a go for sure!
Enjoy!
-
Very nice Arzi, absolutley beautiful.
-
Well done Arzi looks brilliant. We will need a sound demo when it's playing nicely!
-
That looks so cool! Amazing job man!
-
yes that looks really nice..
-
Arzi, you saw it through. The binding idea was brilliant and you made it work. You must be proud of the results it looks great.
-
Thanks guys!
This has been a very big learning experience and a lot of fun. I'm not too familiar with recording sofware but I'll try to make a demo at some point - might take a while though...It's already playing nicely but will need some tweaks as the neck still finds it's place. After I get the headstock finished I'll post pics and hopefully a sound demo.
-
how about a video Arzi, doesn't have to be a high quality recording.
Good news it's playing well.
After watching this build diary you got me keen to build a customised MMB-4 and I'd definitely put the 2nd humbucker in.
I'm also keen to hear how you think the positioning of the neck pup is and the difference in sound from the bridge pup. The pickguard allows a fair bit of movement for the neck pup

I'll try to come up with something in the following weeks. I'll be wiser next week when I get to try this one with the band and my gear. So far I've only tested it with a small speaker -amp combo.
-
crikey Arzi the first thing I do when a build is finished is crank it on the biggest amp you have !
-
The speedbump I have at the moment is that I'm 400km away from my 1x15 and 2x10 tower. All I could find was this test speaker that I almost blew... Tested the previous builds with the same one and the difference was clear.
Can't wait to testdrive it with proper gear... :)
-
ok Arzi that's a big speed bump that's a fair distance.
Sure you will make up for it when you plug it into a beefy amp

hi
Trussrod cover got finished yesterday. Decided to keep it simple.
Since the name of this piece is "Medic Man" and the bass with the drums creates the heartbeat of every song - I thought it would be fitting to put an ekg heartbeat diagram on the cover.

Looks amazing Arzi!
Great work!
-
Awesome looking Bass Arzi. Whole lotta love gone into making that one.
-
Thank you so much guys. :)
Took it out with the band yesterday and really had fun playing. Used 12 o'clock settings on the amp just shaped the sound from the bass for three hours while playing. All I have to say is I don't have run to the amp so much anymore which is really nice.
-
That's totally Badass!!! Great Job arzi
-
Love this build Arzi, the bass looks amazing. Not one of the models I would have immediately picked myself but you have given me pause to re-think. A really fantastic result! Would love to hear a soubd test :).
cheers,
Gav.
-
Wow Arzi, As I said on Facebook a fantastic job! You have taken a quite reasonable kit and turned it into something special! Great stuff Arzi, great stuff!
-
Thanks guys. :)
Saw your comment on facebook, Worzel - thought about posting a thank you there but then decided to keep the conversation here. Might "poke" you one day though - would be nice to have more similar minded Facebook buddies.
I'm collecting parts for a "semi scratch" build for the winter. A '51 p inspired alder body (blank) + scratchplates, maple fretboard neck, Kenfu-inspired body treatment, Billy Sheehan inspired pup - plan except with DiMarzio model one and Seymour Duncan SCPB quarter pounder, still trying to decide on the wiring ( one or double output, wiring, preamps or not etc...), wilkinson bridge and tuners... This might take a while for I don't have a workshop and the necessary tools and have to find a way to lease those.
Will post on the "not PBG build" when I get started. Can't believe I started playing bass 9 months ago and now I'm planning my fourth build... Couple of my friends have asked me to build them or their kid a bass too so you never know what I'll do for a living when I'm older... Turning 40 so plenty of years left before retirement - although at the rate the retiring age is climbing I'll be building ukulele's at 75 to pay for my care....
It's annual "father's day" here today so congrats to all fathers and soon to be ones out there! :)
