Ben you just need to make an appointment with Derek, he may be at this timber yard on weekends
finally got 1st stain coat on this build, bushfire sunset on the rose gum/tazzy oak and golden rod on the silky oak centre.
Pretty happy with the colour combo. Working on the neck now dot markers on the side of the fingerboard. got to mark every fret as it will be a fretless neck/slide axe
Looking the goods Woks, the silky Oak has some nice figure.
Looking good Woks, and a nice colour combo

cheers Tony and Ponch, I'll get a mock build pic up later and another coat on should be enough stain.
Still not sure about pup surrounds colour cream or black, thinking cream and the fingerboard has the blonde edge.
Hardware is going to be chrome
got a quick mock build to see how the cream pup surrounds went, what do you think
I was mucking around with colours on the back tazzy oak and will probably do it all red or even brown maybe
I put in a nice order to Realtone yesterday and the order was dispatched couple of hours off they are so efficient !
Got a nice hardtail bridge, ferrules and some other electronics and bling
I reckon the cream pup surrounds are the go Woks. Mockup looks good!

Wow Warren that's looking nice. Fretless guitar! Brave man.
If you can't do a matching wood pup surround I reckon the cream is the way to go.
typical wokka, pretty wood and nice work
Ah Woks also I've just been informed by one of my outspoken offspring that this is better than the axe I'm current building so there you go! Lol

I wonder how some clear pup surrounds would look on it, not sure cream or black will do the body justice. Rob's suggestion of matching wood rings would be ideal too.
The body colours look great.
Looking great Wokks. The two tone wood body is awesome. Personally I would go either wood or chrome surrounds FTW ;).
cheers,
Gav.
Cheers for the comments fellas.
Think chrome surrounds might be the go. Timber would look cool but not sure I'm patient enough to shape them !
I say go for cream surrounds! Definitely suits the axe!
Ok cheers Pest I'll do a comparison down the track. Time for some GTAV !!
Im not sold on the chrome surrounds with chrome pickups....cream looks like a good transition from the centre piece of timber, and black would tie in to your black knobs and switch....
cheers Swanny for your view. I'm thinking chrome surrounds might be too much chrome. When the Realtone order arrives next week I'll see how black surrounds look with the black control knobs and switch tip
Go left field and ask the Gavmiester for a set of hot pink ones :p
thanks for the suggestions DB but might leave the pink ones for Gavmiester !
got the side dot markers up to the 12th fret done. So I've used black markers for 3,5,7,9 etc. White dot markers for others. 12th fret is 4mm MOP. Bit more sanding and should be ready for headstock staining.
Off now to do to 22nd marker. It's a longer scale length 655mm (25.8") so should sound cool
got a second stain coat on the body and changed to DT butterscotch has darkened the centre oak I bit.
Got the 22 side dot markers finished, bit more sanding.
got first coat of bushfire on the headstock and the flame is working well. Wayne's JBA-4M headstock to the right has the same treatment
You've got some nice rich tone showing there! That headstock is great with that flame!
It'll be interesting to see the late night, beer injected jams recorded on a fretless guitar... I'm waiting for that one!
hahah cheers Swanny, I got no idea how it will play but worst case scenario slide axe
so got some more work done, the hardware goodie box arrived mid week so main parts I needed was the string through bridge (Gotoh), ferules and black pup surrounds to try. Here's a mock build with new pots and switch. Had a fail on the switch thought it was jammed but it had rotated and I sheared the lever 70% off, doh, need to order a new one
got the bridge placed, screwed in and string through holes drilled and ferules test fitted, rushed it a bit and a bit out of alignment.
Got a tele cup output jack and tested black F type knobs and trying out the black pup surround, who prefers cream or black surrounds ?
Found out the neck is sitting a bit proud in the pocket so have to lower a tad, then another coat on body/headstock and bit more cleaning up on the neck, then should be onto clear coats soon
Wokks, thats an interesting jack plate, is that usual for a JM?....by the way this build is looking awesome!
IMO the black looks better than the cream as it matches the knobs. Would still go chrome on all of them FTW (knobs too!)
cheers,
Gav.
cheers Andy, this build is not an exact JM build, more of bits and pieces I like
@ Swanny go back a page or 2 there is a mock build with cream surrounds, I really need to match the knobs if I go cream. No I wasn't rushing to have a beer (was already having one haha), my drill press is too small to reach so it was done with a hand drill
Coming together nicely Woks. Those ferrules are hard to get aligned. I've practiced on scrap wood using a variety of techniques and have yet to get a straight line. And the black pup surrounds with the knobs look great and contrast well with the lighter stripe of wood.

for lined ferrules you could just drill through a metal block and use it as a jig?
Dat's looking sherweet Wokks.
Ripper of a job, its giving me the incentive to start cutting up some Ancient Kauri for a tele
cheers for the comments all.
Yeah Tony scratch builds are much more rewarding than building a kit and you can make any shape you like
Thats too true mate
I have an exact template made from a 1952 Telecaster i have been wanting to do, and a to spec unfinished 1952 Swamp Ash Telecaster body ready to start on that the same guy made for me. All specs off a 1952 he had in his shop for a few days, i just get jittery every time i drag the Kauri out.
