So what's been happening over the past week. Neck is curing nicely. And a lot of body sanding... anyhow now at the timbermate stage. Here is the top

I'll definitely have to muster up some sort of modified pickguard (or go for a clear one) to maximise grain viewing

nice one Ponch, is that the good old ebony timbermate ? It really does bring the best out of the lovely ash grain !
modified timber hider sounds like the go. Get Pablo to cut you a clear one. Looks great to see all the electronics as well as the ash grain !

Timbermate all sanded back ready for staining. So firstly this was sanded to 180 then filled with timbermate and sanded back with 240. Then a very light timbermating before knocking back with 320

Stain will be 50/50 diluted FW jarrah. More pics to follow later...

that ash grain is popping nicely Ponch. Think diluted jarrah stain will look choice as bro !

Here's the first coat of stain. 10mls thinner 5mls stain. I'll do one more pass once this has dried
The ebony timbermate really does the job! It looks more orange in real life and the bit on the left not as dark

wow Ponch, that colour is ideal, matches the grain so well. This will be a sweet speed bumpless bass !

what sort of clear coats are you going to use Ponch ?
Toneriders will rock on this beast ! Lucky you live far enough away from DB would love this in his collection ! haha
Hahaha Yes I'll have to watch out for the bass napper! No sure on the clear coat, I have poly (satin/gloss) and some cans of white knight acrylic laying around. That would take all winter to cure the way it's going!

Looking great Andrew! Do you use special FW thnners? I've got an ash JB in my stack and will be stoked if it comes up half as good as yours is looking.

sounds good Ponch. I'd talk to Pabs about a clear pickguard for the jazzy. You can even get tinted clear sheets, I got a clear blue one for a blue strat I made and even the tremelo cover

If you go with a transparent pickguard, you better stain the front pickup hole.
Hey Fretty good advice but knowing Ponch he will probably copper shield the cavities
This is something I've been thinking about. As much as I love shielding staining the cavity would be the way to go. So then question is black or jarrah...? (same question for the bridge pup cavity)

Hey Ponch, wait and see what colour clear pickguard you choose, then maybe you can do some samples to see how it looks. Black cavities won't highlight the electronics very well
Hi Ponch, I used Black Conductive Shielding paint on my Ash J Bass and it really helped to accentuate the grain popping. Wimped out and went with the supplied white scratch plate but was all set to order either a silver mirror finish to tie in with all the chrome or maybe just a clear. Was scared off by the potential untidy look of wires hanging around underneath. Maybe one day I will revisit as traditional scratch plates hide way too much of the Ash grainy goodness.Quote:

The color is pretty close to DBs rosewood stain he made for Andy40s Tele

Nice job so far....that grain in the body looks intense!
Final coat done, I'll leave this a while to cure before bolting all together...
Neck and decal also done and.. no speed bumps, no fret levelling required [emoji1]

Ah yes Waz you've nailed it. This one has had an organic vibe all along and tried to keep it as best I could. I reckon another few weeks of curing to go..

Looks fantastic. Really looking forward to seeing this assembled. I see what you mean about the 'organic' vibe - love the kinda walnut color and grain out the wazoo. She's gonna be a really nice bass man.

Very natural , this will be a great looking bass
Slow.. but steady progress. Neck fitted out and fretboard polished up. I have obtained some flatwounds for (hopefully) the home run on the weekend. The pup cavities have been stained with some mahogany colortone & finished with a splash of Tru Oil.
And a sensational pickguard from forum member Pablopepper (many thanks appreciated!). This is based on the stock pickguard with correct sized route for the Tonerider jazz pickup and frosted finish so pup cavities not so obvious but grain still shows. Fits like a glove.
and last but not least I cleaned up excess finish and Timbermate around the edges of neck pocket and other routes

This is going to be a fretless beast, makes me want to build one. Forum needs pics as soon as all the bling is on and assembled please !
Cheers Woks. The body itself is actually satin poly but as a few coats have been applied it has a bit of shine to it. The Tru Oil in the cavities was used to make the colortone match the body a bit better
