Alright so I've got about 15 coats of TO on, 0000 after every 3 coats. I wet sanded to 2000 last night and applied the thinnest coat but still there some marks where you wipe. I've read some guys thinning the last coat to get it super smooth, just wondering what everyone's hot tip is with the final tru oil coat.
Nice build Andrew. Looking forward to the final product
Hey Andrew, maybe you need a smoother cloth that you are wiping with may be leaving small ridges. Make the last coat as thin as possible and have a look in good light if you left any marks or ridges. Only thin it if you have to but its not recommended. Got some pics ?
Thanks guys. Wokks I'm just using my finger to wipe it on real thin in small sections. I wet sanded last night so pretty smooth now, put a coat on the front and sides so I'll get a good close up under lights when I get home. Maybe it's because I was hanging the body to do all sides at a time and it was a bit awkward. Laying it down and only doing one side seemed to give me a bit more control.
Quick photo update. I've got some spray naughty oil coming to do final gloss coats after a final 2000 in a few days.

"A taste of honey" :D
No, ya can't use that name - I think the Beatles might object?
This bad girl is gunna be a ripper.
might have to come round for a visit to nap this one.. Just like "Adam, the tele thief" Simply stunning so far matey!
Thanks guys! Aj you're more than welcome mate.
Same deal as the Tele, sick of waiting for the spray to arrive. Few more coats and a sand back between each to flatten the last bit of grain won't hurt anyway. Pretty much glass as is, but i wanna see my reflection.
Very nice already. Can't imagine how the shine will be with the last spray coat. Great work Andrew!
cheers,
Gav.
this has come up a treat mate!
well done Andrew, great looking axe !
Thanks lads. Just a heads up if anyone is interested, Mackay shooters supply has the naughty oil spray cans in stock and can courier them. I should hopefully, finally, receive mine tomorrow.
I'm sure DB would like a can for xmas Andrew hahaha
Put together a naghty room starter kit? Gfs pups and hardware, fw everything, bunnings sand paper, poly, naughty oil and a humongous pick guard.
I wonder if someone should compile a list of things that spell nr banishment, and why they aren't a good idea. I still have little to no idea why its a bad idea to use half this gear.
yeah DB would have to compile the list of naughty room products and stores. It may take him a year to document it all, there's alot of banned products and guitar shapes (Iceman, Warlock) !
Wow Andrew, that looks so nice.
I have not been keeping up with the forums of late so missed this one. I have just started T.O'ing a leftie Strat that I am doing for my brother. If I can get a finish half as good as yours I'll be happy.
rob
Are hybrids allowed, like a Tele body with LP hardware?
Thanks robin. This is really just learning by mistakes, sanding back, and going again. All I do is one aide at a time laying flat on a bench, then just wipe it on in the direction of the grain, put 6 coats on first, then knock it t back with 2000, then repeat every 3 coats. I first tried with a cloth but we didn't get along, and also tried hanging the body and doing it all in one pass, but got runs and streaks. Its slow doing it this way, but it worked.
That is one meaty looking ash body with the finish, very nice
Looks amazing dude! I'm loving it. She's gonna look fantastic with the hardware on!
cheers,
Gav.
Cheers buddy

Was planning on getting the prs in for gotm this month but alas, due to my piss poor checking of parts she is on hold till I get the right tuners. So when I get home tonight it will be a marathon sesh to get this unit banging out some tunes. Basically the body and neck are finished, but that's it. Need to solder everything, shielding, screw everything down, neck, bridge, the works. Wish me luck. Anyone got a good technique for lining up the bridge and neck?
looking sweet Andrew,
there's not much movement of the bridge so put both E strings on and make sure the neck is hard up against the bass side of the pocket and then I'd line up the bridge and drill the bridge screws. Once thats screwed in check offset of strings, clamp it and drill the neck screws
Only 3 solder joins I can wire one of thse blindfolded haha
Thanks Wokka. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the whole electronic assembly is upgraded so new pups, pots, caps, switch and Jack so I'm up for the whole shebang.
oh ok good stuff Andrew, sure Seymour Duncan will have a standard strat 5 way switch 1 vol, 2 tone diagram.
I'm doing the same with an old build upgrading plus the push pull pots with HSH config.
200 posts till the big 4K, think I will need a new tag, other than 'get a life' hahah
Saviour of the noobs? Helper of the helpless? All round nice dude? Whatever it is mate your contribution to this community has been massive and personally you've helped me heaps.
no worries Andrew, if I can help others not make some of the mistakes I've made thats a bonus.
As Jman says we are all here to make the forum build better axes ! haha
Looking at the switch there are 4 lugs and 4 holes, first time wiring these switches. Does it matter which side is which?
What type of switch is it: CRL, Grigsby, import?
It's a crl switch mate.
This is a diagram I did for a CRL 3-way, 0 is the 'common' lug. The only difference for a 5-way is that in position 2 the 1-2 lugs are linked (3-2 on red side) and in position 4 the 2-3 lugs are linked (2-1 on red side). it doesn't matter which side you use, depending on your wiring setup, as long as you match the contact sequence to the switch position you want. Does that help?

Yeah mate that's perfect. Cheers.
Mate thats an awsome effect. Good job
