Nice, kinda looks like a black cherry. Ah! There you go....I hereby unofficially named this build 'The Black Cherry'!
Yeah, Black Cherry does suit. Progress on this one is painfully slow. The weather just sucks for spraying. I'm finding if I sneak out early in the morning and do a very thin coat its OK. So I'm just slowly building it up. Its coming along OK, just not fast enough!

Still waiting on some stuff I ordered for the Steampunker and my Washburn so building activity has pretty much ground to a halt. So annoying as I'm on holidays with the house to myself at the moment.
Ah well, at least I get to play my other guitars nice and loud :).
Yeah I am fully appreciative of it!
I rarely get time off during the year, I work 2 jobs from home and carry the lions share of the housework (my wife shift works), so having a bit of time where I am not constantly picking up after everyone or being a taxi service is awesome.
It also lets me do things like paint and renovate - much easier to make progress when you don't have to work around people :)
Man I fricken hate it when the weather stops progress !
That colour is looking pretty nice though.
Nice and dry the last couple of days so I think I'm good with the clears. I'll let it dry and settle back and then cut it right back and polish.

Learnt a few things on this finish to be put into practice when I do the Steampunker - which will be a partially natural wood finish. I did no grain fill as it was maple and bass wood I figured I'd get away with it. I think I will once all the clear is cut back, but I could have saved myself some mucking around and got it a lot flatter I think.
Also didn't really enjoy the fountain pen ink staining. I think it probably would have been ok, but I will stick to the right products for the job next time.
Can't wait to wire it up with the Lace pickups and see how they sound.
Dry enough to handle, but I'll probably give it another few days to keep hardening. There are quite a few clear coats on there so the orange peel will cut out no problems. The way the colour shifts from black inside to the dark cherry outside is just awesome, but very difficult to photograph! Trying very hard to be patient.....

Love that colour!!
Coming up nicely mate.
OK, after exercising a super human amount of patience I started buffing back the SG last night.
Blocked back with 1500 then 2000 wet and dry, being extra carful around the holes.

I'm really happy with how its coming up although I have spent a ridiculous amount of time on it.
There are a couple of scratches I need to go over again and give it a hit with the swirl remover, but wow - it's really doing it for me. The boy may have to have one of the other guitars to call his own :)
Also working on my truss rod cover which will eventually feature the headstock logo down the middle. I'm just using some aluminium flat bar, should go well with the alumitone hum buckers.

I also got a bunch of push pull pots in the mail. I'm planning to do this one so you can split the neck and bridge and use them as single coils.
That color is pretty cool sonic. I'm a little envious nice work[emoji106]
Sonic, that SG is looking so good. That black and then cherry in the sun business is looking insanely good so far
Cheers guys, I'm really happy with it.
Its so light as well. The hum buckers weight almost nothing. I can't wait to play it.
But being patient has paid off so far, I'm going to continue the slowly, slowly approach and get it as good as I can.
Damn Sonic that looks the dux nuts! Very cool truss rod cover too.
*WHISTLES* damn sonic, that's looking ace
Thanks All. It's so exciting to see it all shined up.
I did just set myself back a bit by ruining my last sheet of waterslide paper. Sprayed it too soon after printing and it's bled.
I've got more coming express post and plenty else to get on with so not a huge drama - just a sign that I need to keep exercising that patience.......
Really nice result Sonic, what clear did you shoot on this one?
Jarrod will have a fit, but this is just Septone Top Coat Clear. It was sprayed over 2 or 3 weeks with very light coats and the occasional light sand. It then spent a week hanging in the shed in hot dry weather with a fan on it before I started cutting it.
Its really hard, you can feel it when sanding that it's well cured so I think it will stay pretty stable.
I should have used a poly really. I will on the Steampunker.
While I'm waiting for more waterslide paper to arrive I figured Id give the TRC a bit of love.
lookin' good. I'll clear over it and then do a normal water slide. "Black Cherry" seems to be apt for this, so thanks to Brownsworthy for that one. I think every single build I've deviated from the original post in some way. you really do just need to go with the flow sometimes.

So a bit of progress.
Stole the customised grovers off the Victory build. They go well with the TRC. The logo will be reversed out of a black stripe down the middle, so the lettering will be aluminium.

After much stress and extreme care I got my bridge and tailpiece posts in. Lovely and clean. I ended up using an old mechanics trick. I put the post receivers in the freezer and warmed up the body with a hair dryer. Then quickly moved the receivers into place and gave them a couple of taps with the mallet and they went in really smoothly. They certainly aren't coming out. Which of course is a problem because you'll never guess what I forgot to do first.
Yup, earth wire. Dang. Fortunately the bore for that is easy to access on this guitar, so I got a sharp drill bit and drilled through the receiver, inserted some stripped wire and screwed the post in. All good thankfully, but here wee some choice words when I first realised what I had done.
So this brings me to wiring (Heya Weirdbits :) )I have spent a bit of time this morning going between the standard wiring diagrams, the Lace wiring guides and push pull pots. I'm starting to get a bit lost, I think I need more eyes.
I've got 2 push pull pots for the volume controls. I want to leave the tone's as normal. When they are pushed in I'm after standard 2 humbuckers, 2 volume, 2 tone. If I pull up on the neck volume I want to split that coil and same for the bridge volume.
This is what I have so far and I'm not convinced its correct for what I want to do. I can't decide if the black/white wire (I've drawn as dark grey) needs to go to earth for this to work? I've included some pics from Lace which I hope will help.

Haha! I'm glad to have helped, Sonic!
That truss rod cover looks kinda like a weapon! I'm sure with those pickups and set up this one will definitely be quite a weapon!
Truss rod cover looks amazing! Such a great shape, and so shinyyyy
The black & white aka your dark grey should be connected to ground in normal non-split mode. Normally, I'd just link that to the back of the pot and your wiring would be good to go. However, Lace suggest having the ground switched between the black/white and plain white when splitting. I'm not sure if this is because it works better with the pickup's internal configuration or just ease of wiring, but probably best to go with that.
So, instead, connect your ground to the middle lug of the push/pull, the black/white (your dark grey) to the right lug (as drawn) and white to the left lug (as drawn). That follows the Lace advice and gives you split when up and normal when down.
(I drew up something a little crazier a while back)
You are a legend Scott, thanks for that, I think you've cleared up my confusion, but, please bear with me as my brain is fried this afternoon: Is this now correct? I've basically just introduced a switched earth off the black and white (dark grey) wire, rather than just permanently earthing it?
https://i.imgur.com/Sctu3gfl.jpg
Cheers.
Yep, your connections to the push/pulls are correct. The only thing that you are missing is for the black wire linking the middle lugs on the two push/pulls to explicitly connect to ground, or is that to be assumed where it crosses the link to the toggle switch ground?
Ah yes, that is supposed to be a join there and not just the wires passing over each other. The earthing can probably be a streamlined a bit.
Awesome. It makes sense to me now, I just need to find some time to actually do.
So close I can almost taste it...

Looking good there bro
Be glad when the glamour shot phase is over - damn thing picks up fingerprints like crazy.
Looking great so far, thanks for sharing. Just got my first set neck kit today. An RCM 12, always wanted an electric 12. What do you plan to use for glue?
nice work Sonic
Cheers guys.
Some more incremental progress. Been a bit busy the last few days with real life. Finally got a sealing coat and waterslide on my TRC. Took ages to get a result I was happy with. I ended up having to remove some of the shine as the paint wouldn't stick and kept flaking off. I also switched to Rustoleum clear, which seems to work better on the aluminium. It matches up nicely with the alumitones being somewhere between the dark aluminium and the other chrome bits.
Got a tiny bit of dust under the clear on the edge, but I think I'll be able to polish it out when its dry.

Hopefully onto wiring before too long.
Just to give you an idea- I definitely don't always get it right first go :)
