Well done!
I left the first few coats of poly cure over the weekend and gave it all a light sand (600) and then branded it. looking forward to getting a few more coats on it.
I thought I would share another learning from this build. I am seeing a strange effect with my decal (that I think adds to the charm and character of these kit builds). The colour decals seem to be slightly transparent once applied to the guitar. I think this is due to the type of printer I used for the colour decals. I had my black and white decal that I used on the SGB-34 printed on my black and white ink jet printer at home on the decal paper for Ink jet printers this decal is solid, for the other builds I used the same paper to print a selection of colour decals from a colour laser printer, I think that this is the reason why the decal is a little transparent once applied. You can see in the photos the difference in the decals, once the decal is coated and buffed it becomes sort of a ghost label, I like the effect.
Note left and right handed labels.
Standard printers don't print white. They rely on the white of the paper and simply do not apply ink on those spots. That's why your decals seem yellow and go transparent. There's just not very much ink on there. It's a nice effect though.
Hey thanks. I was going for a gold colour but the paper I used was clear not white, that is good to know. I will remember that if I ever need to print colour again.
This part of the build seem to be like groundhog day. But the work put in here is the difference between having a product you look at and love or something you look at and and think if only I did that or should have waited....any way not a whole of change apart from a deeper shine and richer colour. I really like the way the headstock has come out, very glad I revisited it from my original all black headstock.
She looks beautifull! I really love a rimburst over a tearburst so I think this is a killer axe! No scratchplate I hope?
This looks so nice, lovely golden burst - love the ghost decal effect - very coool
Final coat of poly after 600 wet and dry sand, its been a long few weeks but final result is close to spot on, I will give it a week or two to cure and then give it a polish. Then looking forward to installing the upgraded wiring harness and Epi Probuckers, along with a set of genuine Grover deluxe tuners.
Well done Darren looks tops
awesome burst!
That is sublime DM. Wonderful work!
Very good looking! Love it :)
Great looking guitar DM!
As it's nice and shiny already, it should polish up really well. Great work.
After a long groundhog day, the finish is complete. After lapping in the pickup surrounds for that sweet fit, I have installed some upgrade components, Grover Deluxe tuners and an Epiphone quick connect wiring harness with coil tap, toggle switch and Jack (see the Epiphone pro series) just waiting the Probucker pickups, then this guitar is complete. The wife will be happy to see the end of this one...She has been waiting for me to build a new cot for the baby. I will share some better photos when its completely finished in the GOTM comp.
That looks brilliant!
very very nice!
very nice looking build Darren, on the home stretch now, Some other forumite is in the same situation complete LP but waiting for the pickups
That is looking great! It would even look better without the pickguard ;) (but I dislike the LP pickguard simply because it hides all that beautiful top of the body)
I'm afraid you'll have to ditch the Les Paul truss rod cover if you want to enter it in GOTM.
Really amazing burst man, and a super final finish. Great job!
cheers,
Gav.
Thanks again for the great feed back. Its been a very enjoyable build for me. Its nice to have it come out just how I pictured. Looking forward to playing it.
Just another shot of the back
looks good what I can see Darren it's a very dark photo. I'll give you a tip if you enter it in GOTM nice clear photo's will favour scores with the judges.
Or just do some enhancing in something like Photoshop Elements. Like this:

Looking much better :)
Some more Photos while I wait for pick ups.
magnificent gloss on that LP....very nice.
LOOK AT THAT FINISH!
Its not secret I am not a fan of the F&W stains but DAYAM that finish and burst is excellent.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, that's NICE!
Shiney! You've got your polishing off to a fine art.
If only my build would be half that glossy I would be a happy dude... Awesome work!!
Not much to add that has not already been said DMartin. That looks superb!
Looks amazing! As a matter of interest how many coats of spray on poly did you end up applying?
Thanks Andrew. Sort of lost count, probably 5 or 6 thin coats to build up a top coat. Then a final coat after a light sand (600grit).
Andrew the LPJ in your avatar photo is that a PBG kit?
Ah yes. Here's the build thread and final photos

Thats a sweet LPJ. Shame there not a PB left handed option.
Thanks Phrozin. I'm very happy with the finish, originally thought I might end up with a tabacco burst, but after the golden teak stain went on it was never going to be anything but desert burst. The photo courtesy of google images is of a Gibson LP in desert burst just as a comparison.
