Nah, just a bit of wet timbermate. It was all sanded down to 320 before it went on, so nothing untoward.

Ok, good to hear ;)
Ahh yes, Erina Jaycar - we are intimately acquainted! The wiring harness looks nice and clean Rossco. Great job!
cheers,
Gav.
Weekend # 3. After 2 weekends of seemingly endless prep and sanding it Dingotone Time!

If its not a complete disaster, after to follow later today.
Its amazing how adding some colour shows up imperfections. quite a few little holes/gaps in the veneer that I hadn't noticed, and some glue that I thought I had gotten rid of with a combination of goo off and 400 grit. Was a bit worried about going through, but obviously should have gone a little bit harder. Oh well no guitar of the month for me this time, maybe the tele I do next, or the 335 after that or the.......:-)

I thinks it is awesome!
Thanks for that. With the weather here won't be going near it with the intensifier coat till next weekend. So see what it looks like after that
Man that spalt is KILLER!
Great looking spalted top!
Imperfections in the woods are just part of dealing with a spalted finish. Mine was uneven and even now you can feel the ripples in the top. It all adds to the character.
I hope you pressed 'save' before you started staining. Then all you have to do is reload and work on those glue patches and it will all be fine. ;)
Aways. Got auto save configured for every 5 mins :-)
Week 4:
Not much can be done this weekend, only going to be putting the intensifying DT coat on. Wondering what I could do before that to knock something else off I decided to fit the tuners, mark them up and pre drill the screw holes.

Question while I'm playing around with the neck. I did kind of expect the bone nut to fit the neck.
Attachment 17953
It's the best part of 2mm too wide. I take it it calls for some very careful sanding, taking the same amount of each side. Nervous!
DingoTone Intensifier coat.

Regarding the nut, the overhang accommodates variations in neck width and allows you to tweak its position side to side slightly to get the outside strings sitting where you want them relative to the fretboard edge. When it comes to stringing up for the first time don't glue the nut in place, just let the string tension hold it. Nudge it side to side as needed until you get the position you want, then use a pencil to mark the edges of the fretboard on it.
Then you can remove the nut and file and sand down so the width matches perfectly. Do it slowly and carefully as the edge of the bone can sometimes splinter a bit if you're too rough.
Thanks for that. Great tip.
If you ever do need to file or sand the nut in-situ, always mask up the surrounding neck first. You might think you can get away with it, but you'll slip or not realise what you're doing, and you will mark the neck or the fretboard. I've done it myself.
Damn that intensifying coat is i n t e n s e
Rossco that is looking insanely good. Keep up the good work !
Cheers guy's. Start the finishing coats this weekend.
Not Happy Jan. Got the guitar out this morning all ready to give it a light rub with some 0000 and put the finishing coat on. Not completely dry. Not surprising I suppose considering the weather on the East Coast this week. Oh well next weekend hopefully. Rather than do nothing, off the the big green shed for some 3 mm ply, thought I'd try making up some wooden control cavity covers, I'm just not loving the idea of the cream plastic against the tru-oiled mahogany. So first attempt, cut and sanded to size with a coat of timbermate applied, have to wait and see how things match up.

Cheers Adam, not going to touch with anything this week, just leave it alone. If it takes another week or even 2 to go off no big deal really. Teaches you patience if nothing else.
Not too bad for a first attempt. Will see how the colours match when I start oiling.

This humidity is doing my head in!!!!!
nice work on the control cover Rossco, what sort of timber is it ?
with the bad weather for spraying can you start the wiring harness maybe ?
Cheers for that, nothing fancy, 3mm marine grade ply. Will see how close I can get the colours.
Already done the harness, did that a few weekends ago.

harness looks good. If its too humid you need another kit to start sanding buddy ! haha
That's an option. Will be a TL-51 next then an ES-1G
The man with a plan...I like it
Intensifier coat take 2. With the East Coast weather the first coat that was done 2 weeks ago was going nowhere fast, blotch and tacky. So carefully rubbed it back lightly and it basically all just wiped away.
I've had everything sitting in out back room for the last week, and the AC on dehumidify and I've just done a very light coat of intensifier, hopefully this one takes.
No rush I suppose, I'm still waiting on a pickup I ordered at the start of Feb, apparently it lands April 4. Once that gets here If I can't kick on I will be getting testy......
After about 7 weeks of waiting the last piece on my shopping list finally arrived. At the end of the day the wait hasn't cost me any time, as with the weather its taking two weeks for any colour I've been adding to dry, so still not ready to fit it, probably one more week by the feels of it before the 2nd intensifier coat has gone off enough to put on the top coat.

Ok pissed off now. The eagle eyed amongst you might have noticed this is a bridge pup, F spaced, and Its supposed to be a neck. Oh well, another 7 weeks I suppose until the right one gets here. Pretty sure I ordered the right thing, but got lost in translation somewhere.
I feel your pain.
Waiting sucks.... :(
Ok, back on track. No guitar of the month contender, maybe leave that to the next build :-). Too many glue marks that I thought I had gotten rid off, but hadn't, and quite a few small holes in the veneer. Think I'll give the veneers a miss in the future.
Hardware installed and neck set. Thought I'd set the neck before oiling the back as I'll have to fill a couple of small spaces round the neck pocket, and wanted to oil all in one go to ensure a consistent colour.

Your noted flaws and issues aside, its still looking marvellous Rossc0. Thats a strong spalt pattern on the front and you'd be judging harshly on a first effort by saying it wasn't GOTM worthy. Unfortunately there are some utter show stopping jaw droppers posting up for June, so maybe finish "Adjusting" things until next month? :) Great work mate.
Long way from being finished yet. Probably take me a couple of months from here.
G'day.
I'm about to start on the back and neck with some tru-oil. Any tips and hints, best way to apply, number of coats, looks like it dries pretty quickly, but is it best to leave it 24 or 48hr between?
Cheers
One down. Many to go.
