Good stuff
Here ya go, all done and sanded level.
Gotta love the LED's lol good when its dark and you've been drinking ;)
So after spending most of the day to-ing and fro-ing and pfaffing about doing boring business bitz it was time to see how yesterday evenings efforts look..
Off with the tape a quick scrape and this is what we have.
Its a piano?
Ok. That is damned impressive. Did you do that from individual bits?
wow DB that looks sensational. How hard was it to get all the lengths of white/black binding match ?
that is a really cool effect well done.
When will it be ready for me to pick up ? haha
I gotta say thats very innovative, very impressed.
First step is to laminate the black and white bindings, then work out the lengths of each section so they end up being as close as possible to the same length at each side of the neck pocket.
Cut each one and fit individually... What you see here is four hours of work.... Only another 10 hours to go.... There has to be an easier way to do this..................
Give it to Clarry to do
Dude....10 MORE hours? Wow. Dedication.
haha Clarry can help DB. It is time consuming DB but the effect will be well worth it.
What colour will you stain the body/neck ? seafoam green or TV yellow still ?
You got to stop Ads stealing this baby !
Conch girl it is then...
+1 for Conch girl DB

Gee there some some cheeky buggers on this forum.... :D
I found the stage outfit to match the bass.

hehe 'found'....but does it still fit you?
Very nice Phil.
I have yet to do any binding. I have been researching for my next build and although it will just be plain it is still going to be a challenge.
Phil, can I ask you 2 questions please:
1. With normal binding would you usually laminate 2 strips of binding before applying to the body or as you apply it to the body?
2. Do you use glue or acetone for laminating and applying?
Thanks mate.
May have to continue the chess board theme all over.
For your first attempt I would highly recommend just using a single strip, but if you want to go for the double binding look these are the steps.
Make sure you get ABS binding, cellulose binding is a different beast and quite a pain to work with..
1: get one of those teflon type chopping boards. It will need to be big enough to fit the whole body.
2: with a template, rout a groove 3/4 the depth of the binding and the width of both pieces.
3: gently heat the first strip with a hair drier set on a medium setting and feed it into the groove.
4: next grab the second piece and repeat.
5: remove the second strip then with a small paint brush apply acetone between the strips as you feed it back into the slot.
(You need to stand on one leg, holding your tongue inbetween your teeth as you go... It is a bit tricky but worth the effort :p )
Leave it for a few hours then pull it out.
Bingo, you have a pre shaped binding ready for install.
Then as you install it into your binding rout apply some medium viscosity CA glue, or you can use Tarzans Grip.
You will need to hold it in place with high tack binding tape as you go (I prepare a heap of strips of tape before I start)
If you go for a single binding strip, you wont need to pre bend it in a jig. You can do it by heating and bending it around the edge of the guitar. Again, hold it in place with a few strips of tape as you go.
With the binding channel, make sure it is slightly narrower and shallower than the binding. You will scrape the excess of later.
It is also important to make sure the sides of the Guitar have been pre sanded and are free of any uneven bumps and hollows as these will show up as gaps between the body and binding.
After you remove the tape, you may see a few gaps. Simply make a slurry with the offcuts of binding in acetone which you can then use as a bog to fill them.
Let it cure over night and then you can scrape the bindings flush :)
That's awesome Phil, thanks very much. Just what I needed, instructions for noobs.
As per usual I will be doing it with hand tools only (so no routed template) and I'll be trying 2 or maybe 3 strips, but I get the general idea. If you're going to try something new, might as well make it as difficult as possible I say. ;)
Thanks again Phil, much appreciated.
If anyone can nail it with hand tools, it will be you Robin. 8)
And you all think mine is off the wall.....
Check out this beauty from our good friend Perry Ormsby.
Gulp.
@ DB you think Perry's axe the binding is individual pieces ? they don't make a chequered binding ?
nice binding tutorial DB
@ Westie07 you crack me up how you call people their real names !
I think that Perry must have made the binding strips up by laminating, cutting then re laminating.
You would have to either be barking mad or have the patience of Job and eye sight of an Eagle otherwise.......
yeah Perry is the master luthier for sure.
DB you could have dyed the white binding pink to match the conch girl stain ?
By the way for the record how many Conch Girl kits sold when you were the Wudtone supplier ?
Whats this obsession with conch girl? :p
From memory we sold one maybe two?
haha DB I have no obsession with Conch Girl
the obsession is winding you up mate haha
I think I've seen some checkered binding on my travels DB.
