looking good Hugh
SHould look pretty special when you finish Hugh
Cheers Tony & Wokka, here's hoping!
Wow, that spalted LP body is looking great Hugh, are you going to finish the neck in the same colour?
It just gets better :)
Nice colour that really enhanced the spalty top. Looking good.
Ok, so I decided to shape the headstock. Bit more of a challenge after I've started the staining/finishing process but, never too late right??
I toyed with the ides of doing a traditional Les Paul design but in the end went with my own simple asymetrical swish type of design.. Still needs retouching with stain/finish and a little more sanding Attachment 8885Attachment 8886Attachment 8886etc, but overall.. it looks ok I think... What do you guys reckon??
Looks a little like horns! ANgus would be proud!
Looks good, better than the standard straight slab look you had before.
Great job Hugh

Sanded, retouched with clear stain on the back and Bushfire sunrise on the face.. Will need a rub with steel wool once it dries but again, I think it looks ok.. =)
Love the colour, and its good to see you doing your own thing with the headstock.
Hugh, is it my imagination or is that truss rod and pocket not quite central in the headstock/neck end? I've been looking at it and I wondered if it is just an optical illusion caused by your asymmetric swoop design, or if my OCD has finally sent me off into the deep end of spatial/dimensional paranoia??
headstock shape looks heaps better Hugh. Personally I would have rounded the top left area rather than having a flat edge.
@ Frankenwashie the truss rod pocket looks in line with the D and G slots in the nut. think it looks like there is more meat to the left of the pocket than the right, but think it should be central
Yeah @Wokka you're probably spot on. I'm going with weird optical illusion. The more I look at the photo, the more it drifts from side to side. I should stop drinking coffee about now......
@Hugh, pay no attention to the odd jittery, slightly vibrating guy playing with timbermate in the corner....
@Wokkaboy- I flirted with rounding one/both edges but in the 'flesh' the design actually doesn't look too bad, especially when you turn it around into the playing position..
@Frankenwashie... you know what, on close inspection the truss rod my just slightly favour the G string slot?? it's hard to tell for sure as there is a little more wood on the left of the headstock than the right, which contibutes to that optical illusion thing you refered to... the whole headstock was never cut quite symetrical I'm thinking??
Your not as jittery and old as you may think afterall!! haha!
It's a head scratcher, I found when I trued everything up with my EXA-1 build and aligned the centre of the body to the truss rod, that it actually deviated from its true centre by about 1.5 mm, doesn't sound like a lot but it caused some blinking and trepidation prior to the reshaping of my tenon!

Updated photos, 3rd layer of finishing coat on the main body.. not sure if it will be the last, I guess I'll know this time next week!!
:p
Looking pretty good Hugh
Cheers Tony, I appreciate the support
Just a couple of quick questions for the group, what's the go with Tru-oil?
Is it a neutral colour that can go on any tone of stain? ..or are there different colours etc??
Do our guitars need a finishing oil after using Dingo tone fishing coat?
What are the advantages of using Tru-oil eg. how do you lose out by not applying a finnish oil?
No politially correct answers please, just give me the truth as you see it.. we're all grown ups here (as far as I'm aware at least lol)
Tru oil doesnt need any finishing oils, i think my guitar was done at 14 coats.
It is neutral, but any stain is going to darken the timber a little. TO didnt darken much at all, Poly U is popping my build and making it darker.
What i started with

Hugh you've done a great job with the Dingotone. Well done for someone's first guitar build so far your rocking it. Look forward to seeing it all built and finished. Don't rush it. That spalt is looking amazing.

Wow Tony!! 14 coats?? You obviously put some work into it mate.. It does look great though.. Did you use anything else on it or just the tru oil?
Just TO and timbermate and some Birchwood Casey sealing filler between the 1st few hits.
I have it all logged somwhere
Yeah it's great the first time you plug it I and bring her to life. I don't think this will be your last build Hugh lol.
Hugh the tru oil can go over any stain colour. I presume you are asking questions do you want a higher gloss than the DT clear ?
There's a chance the TO may go yellow over time, I have some builds about 3 years old with TO and they look the same as they did day 1.
Generally it the colour will go slightly yellow with a few coats of TO but will look great on your LP
Spectacular awesome stain and spalt. Note to self add something spalted to my list of future projects...
