Holy jumpin catfish on a hot plate!
The Uluru has really come up a treat on this build.
Methinks this may have to be used on the website as the colour swatch! :)
Looking sweet. Looking forward to see the finished product. Think I might need to get a EXA-7 just to try the Uluru Red now and the Missus just asked me to put a wish list together.
That color is amazing. Wish I could get Dingotone here!
Gday all!
I haven't posted for a while because I've been battling with my top coats. Been through two bottles of top coat but basically I can't get it not to streak. Each coat has had a week to dry before applying the next and I steel wool between coats but still it looks crud, matte in parts and shiny in others. I've built a fair bit of furniture in my time so I feel like I know what I'm doing but I just can't get the results I want. Anyway I think I'm gonna sand back and go for a Cabothane finish as my next move. Here's a pic to show where I'm at. I'm a bit stumped.Attachment 6620
Hey Damo,
Try scuff sanding it back with 400 grit.
Also it looks like you may have inadvertantly over worked it.
Sent you another final coat today with your nut :)
I have had similar issues with my EX-5 and just put it down to more humidity in South East Qld perhaps? DT stain coats went on fine then applied intensifier a couple of times but started to notice what looked like dust particles had been attracted to it whilst slightly damp? After Woks suggested light 0000 steel wool between coats that took care of the dust particles but it still had similar dry matt patches like Damo's guitar. Applied a top coat and probably had cotton square a bit too wet and it ended up with a few runs here and there. Went to lightly sand with 0000 steel wool again and the finish just rolled up in little gummy balls all over the place as if it had not dried properly? It had been left to cure for more than 10 days in what was pretty stable conditions. Ended up having a go with 400 grit as mentioned above and it only made things worse so had to go wet & dry which took things back a long way as if there was only one stain coat applied.
Put another stain coat on almost 2 weeks ago and intensifier on last Sunday. Was going to do some work on it today but the finish still felt as that it had not cured and nowhere near able to take a light 0000 steel wool.
Is this what you would normally expect when using DT? Can't wait to give it one more hit of intensifier then get on with the top coats as I am getting sick of just looking at it hanging around to properly cure. Also wondering if the Dingo Wax can help solve some of the blemishes and harden the surface as what I have experienced so far has me a bit concerned.
DB that's really nice of you to do that. You're a gentleman!
I'm not sure how I'm overworking it. Is it the pressure I apply maybe?
I'm fairly light on(I think), stroke with the grain and wipe once. I wring out the cloth too so there's not much tc on it.
Feel like a bit of a dill!
Starting againAttachment 6694
@Damo.. Don't feel like a dill :)
@Wazz.. This might affect both of you, what is the temperature and humidity?
Seems these problem occur when the temp goes over 35 and the humidity over 60%...
I am revisiting the formulation hoping to resolve these issues. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Hey DB! Thanks mate.
Temp has been around 18-25 most of the time. But being Melbourne it sure hasn't been consistent.
We are having bizarre weather (even for Melbourne) where we have 30-32 followed by 17 the next day though.
Top coats were getting 5-7 days to cure between coats but maybe this inconsistency in temp has had adverse affects on
curing?
Hope this info helps.
This time round I'm going to double my curing time just to be safe and I'll attempt to do thinner coats.
I have had these issues as well, and I'm sure it has more to do with humidity than temperature.
Yeah, have to agree it is more likely humidity than temperature as we haven't even cracked 35 degrees yet as that will come over the next few months. Whilst temperature has been stable it doesn't take much to get humidity up over 60%, not that you seem to notice it as that is pretty average in these parts, unlike Perth where it is much drier air most of the time.
Put another final intensifier coat on yesterday and giving things at least 7 - 10 days to cure before a light 0000 steel wool scuff. Will let you know if I have issues again with top coat application. Slow and steady from here on and glad I have another kit that just arrived to start work on.
Hey All!
I haven’t posted for a while because I’ve been rescuing my guitar from the brink of destruction.
Initially I wasn’t going to post at all because I’m a little embarrassed about how bad things got with my guitar but I also figured that my build might be a good read for those who think they have completely stuffed up their own build and can learn from my mistakes.
I sanded the top coats back and tried to re-stain with a mahogany colour (feast watson) but as you can see by the pic..epic fail!

I took a week off…
After much thought I decided that the only way forward was to paint a solid colour because any more sanding and I would’ve ended up with a pile of sawdust and a fretboard. Going back over the guitars I’ve loved over the years black Gibsons have been high on my list. Did a lot of reading and watched many tutorials about rattle/spray can paint jobs.
Got the body back to a smooth blotch free, stain free place after hours of careful sanding. 3 Base coats using Duramax with extremely light sand in between to get rid of overspray. I ended up with a really smooth even surface to lay down the colour.

3 Colour coats using Duramax flat black. I’ve never used this product before but I must say it was super easy and the finish is flawless.

Onto my 5th coat of Cabots gloss polyurethane and I couldn’t be happier. It's like looking into a mirror! Leaving to cure now and will do cut/polish and assembly after Christmas holidays.

WOW Damo, bummer it didn't work out, I really loved that bright red DT stain you had. Why did you rub it back for FW mahogany ?
nice rescue it's looking nice and shiny now. Will this have gold hardware would look cool over the black ?
Hey Wokka,
Massive bummer.. I had too many people coming in saying "boy that's really red.. I thought you wanted cherry?" and I guess after staring at it for so long I started doubting whether I'd made the right choice..
Anyways it's so black now there's no turning back haha!
Gold hardware would be nice but I bought some Gretsch Pups for it and they are chrome..
Hey Damo, lesson learned I spose, thanks for sharing what happened.
Chrome with Gretsch pups should look awesome.
For the record I think the colour red was super cool.
Thanks Wokka.. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Glad I've rescued her.. She will now be known as Black beau..
I've just done a mock build on my ES1G which I received last week.. This time I'm keeping the door locked so no-one can pass comment on my colour choice.
haha yeah Damo, colour is very much personal preference, so if you like the colour roll with it !
Damo, nice save the black looks awesome. I have recently wrestled with the same FW stain. It's very strong unless diluted substantially...

cracks in binding makes it look a bit vintage Damo !
Aahh thanks Wokka you're a legend!
It looks about 450years old now but I'm cool with that haha..
yeah Damo, unfortunately cracked binding the only fix is to replace it which is a massive job.
Yeah I looked into it and it looked like a massive job.. I figured I'd rather play the guitar with slightly "reliced" binding than wait another month doing binding, losing massive clumps of hair and filling my swear jar trying to teach myself how. Life she too short!
plus if you had to replace the binding in it's current state most likely you would have to refinish the top and sides.
How many times you already sanded back this build ?
3 times which is twice more than it needed and went through the cap in a couple of spots on the last sanding.. Not fun!
haha I know the feeling Damo, if I have a guitar body that the clear cracks/bubbles or rejects I will just stick beer labels on it
I love the beer label axe! I would've loved a guitar like that back in the touring days!
Hey woks I got a few runs on my last coat. Do you sand the runs out or spray over them? I've read differing opinions.
Hey Damo. Let it cure then sand out runs otherwise will be too hard to get a flat finish
It's finally happening! Clamping time.. Felt like I'd never get here..

Good job! Black gloss will show any imperfection, and that's looking pretty good!
Looks amazing! What kind of pickups are they? They also look the business with that finish of yours.
cheers,
Gav.
Good save and I reckon it looks even better in black.
