Start 'em young. That's about the age my Dad sat me down with Zappa, Hendrix, Dire Straits and the Shadows records (none of which I'd ever heard him listen to before). Opened my eyes to a whole bunch of great music and I realised how cool my Dad actually is (and how much of a music nazi my Mum is, lol).
BG and his Zappa.... I gotta get myself that book! I hear it is an awesome read!
Started sanding the body this afternoon, with an eye to applying a dark stain to pop the grain...and then nerves got the better of me. When trying to pop the ash grain, what should I look out for? Do I sand to 180g, then stain- or do I take it to 240, apply stain and sand back from there?
Only ask as I'm new to ash.
My gut feeling says proceed as if the pop coat is the actual stain, then go 240-400 grit to bare wood...
Id recommend sealing the ash too. It's very funny wood with stain. Sealing will help consistent colour
Thanks chaps. In sealing the ash after the initial grain pop, will this be a problem to put a burst over the top? Or is the sealing for after the whole process?
This will be sanded back, I promise!
nice one BG, just saw this on FB.
The grain should pop nicely after you sand it back
Looking great BG. Keenly waiting to see this sanded back!
cheers,
Gav.
Coming along nicely Bass Guy.
Two shots of the front stain- very happy with the potential grainpop by the bridge!
Very nice there BG! I'm liking the bridge grain too!
Nice work this is going to pop beautifully.
grain looking great BG. You might need to sand more black out before the stain coats. I'd do a small test run to see how the colour comes out. When is colour going on ?
nice progress El, looks good
Second coat of grainpop stain, and all the bling. Should be nice when I sand it back this weekend.
nice one BG, almost tempting to keep this colour and same colour on headstock !
I'm having a Takei moment... "Oh myyyyy..."
grain is popping nicely BG, is this a 3rd coat or you run a wet rag over it ?
Either way its going to look fantastic with blue and green Dingotone over it
Oh my indeed
Looking great BG! You could just leave it like this and have an amazing build. I am looking forward to seeing your next steps!
cheers,
Gav.
Nooo I'm really keen to see PBG's first dragon burst!
Headstock plugged, and back sanded to pop the grain. Coming along nicely.
Before I cut the headstock shape I will plane both the rear and face of the headstock, particularly as we'll need a flat surface for the veneer.
looking great BG, coming along nicely, can't wait to see the headstock cut and re-drilled tuner holes. What veneer you putting on it again, you get something from Bman ?
Brendan gave me a lovely sheet of maple veneer, which I will whack on once ready. Sadly the grain of it may have to run vertical as I think the headstock will be juuuuuuuuuuust a fraction too large.
so you haven't got enough veneer to run the grain parallel with the tuners/top edge?
should look fine running vertical wouldn't worry too much
Yes, the grain is subtle enough not to be distracting.
I hereby declare the sanding process completed. Until the next time I have to sand it... 😝
Is it just the lighting, or has it gone sort of reddish?
That's just the ambient lighting of my hovel... ;-) It's classic pale ash in the flesh.
Bring on the colour :)
First pass of stain coats. Cropped to fit on the website.
Darkine has taken well- I will wait to see how the Bondi Blue cures.
hows the front look BG or are you staining one side at a time ? Bolt a hanger onto it, if you have a vice can do the whole body in one hit
I'm doing one at a time for now. I will see how brave I feel in a week or so...
coming along well El, love the featured grain
Looks nice mate. Looking forward to the intensity in the next coats. :)
