Hope you are on the mend. I find a mix of motorcycles and guitars the perfect remedy for most things :)
thanks mate. youre totally correct!
once my strength is back i cant wait to hit the road again. My last trip was a 12 day, 5,000k run down to tassie and back....sensational roads....
funny thing is that when i go away for a while i really miss my guitars...(oh...and the wife and kids of course)
Lots of planning. Line marking. But a little afraid to start the re-shaping.

I like the coin idea, there's some crackers there too!
A bit of action with the blunt rasp gave me thishttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e078a8986d.jpg
Thats enough for today. ………

If you don't mind a small investment in tools, one of the Japenese files or rasps would make that job easier. They really know their stuff when it comes to hand tools. One of the half-round ones would be perfect for those bevels.

I only have a Shinto Saw Rasp, but it's a brilliant tool. Hope to add more to my toolbox in the future though.
money spent on tools is generally well invested..... :)
Forgot to tale a few pictures along the way. But this is it so far.
Neck wasnt totally snug in the pocket and there was a little bit of wiggle.
As such I was quite afraid i was going to glue in the neck on the wrong angle to the pups and took ages to line it all up.
Hence no pics of the gluing/clamping exercise.
But i have a few of the headstock which i think came out kinda-ok.

Ps: the nut that i got from dingo bass as an add on with the kit purchase is beautiful.
Will show you pics later.
Today im going to do some more fine sanding on the body and try and get rid of all the glue drips from round the neck.

It all Looked fine before i started rubbing in the colour. Then Pop! Out came the imperfections…….
You’d think I would have learnt after a few guitars…but nooooooo. Not me.
Ive sanded back all the rough areas and will attempt another colour rub
Im not very impressed with my choice of timber colour as it seems “plasticy” in the thicker areas to i think i will be applying it a lot thinner / more delicately the second go around.

Gotta love that feeling... I just assume the first coat of anything will reveal imperfections... And then I decide whether to embrace them or not.

I've got a wall full of imperfections. I prefer to call it character, or uniqueness.
Ooh bugger! That’s always the little kick in the nuts with the first colour coat eh?
Whats the old forum adage “sand, sand, sand and when you think you’re done, sand some more!”.
hopefully it’s not too much trouble to sort out?
I hope that's not from the Japanese rasps I suggested earlier!Quote:
Damn sabre tooth rasp!
Yep. This is me embracing my imperfections!

Back looks good. Front looks good.
Neck blemishes are not coming out. Arrrgghhh……
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f44fb1e274.jpg
Ill just sit and contemplate this for a day.

I like it!
I'm not really an SG guy, but it's nice to see one that isn't vintage cherry!
If the neck blemishes aren't coming out, then you really need to go to a coarser grit paper.
I think I probably did three itterations of sanding and re-staining on my SGs until I found and removed all the stubborn filing/sanding marks left over from enlarging the bevels and adjusting the neck heel shape.
Pervert! ;)
I am on my 3rd SG copy and I use a half round rasp to rough out the bevel, then I go to a half round Bastard then finish off with a half round Second Cut. Both of these files are mainly used on metal but as they are of a coarser style they smooth out the wood fine. I got both of mine for between $10-$15 with handles. I then use some 180 grit sand paper and finish off with 240 grit. If you want to see how your finish is going I use some Shellite to clean the surface and it shows any imperfections as well as remove and oil from my hands.
I think ive worked out how to apply the woodstain that ive bought.
Superfine layers. Just like truoil is applied. Then the colour comes out just right. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f9996c924a.jpg
I am also contemplating a “neck tatt” for this one. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...667305a4a3.jpg

Ok. This neck heel has been done three times.
I am not sure that i can get it any better. So im going to live with it and see what happens after a few coats of tru oil

Ive also worked out that after slightly diluting (perhaps 10% water) the wood stain it went on even better than the first two times.
Oh well you live and learn!

Looking good! I'd like to do an SG one day, hopefully it will come out looking anything like this.
What do you think of the Guyker locking tuners? I bought 6 inline for my tele but am a ways off stringing it up. I found the machining wasn't super great, the post nuts didn't want to move freely on at least half of them, which made tightening them up without spinning the entire machine head difficult, even with pre-drilled holes for the position locater pins.
Hi Ross. Thanks for that!
I wish i was better and had more patience but its all great fun and cheaper than going on a bender for one night[emoji23]
Ive found the tuners to be great. They stay in tune and hold well.
I bought 2 sets and have them both on 3+3 headstocks. They went on to replace kit tuners.
However…….the grover minis that are available with kits from pitbull are better and the same price!!!!!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ve had to swap the screw-down nuts on tuners around to get better fits in the past. You’ll probably find some are looser than others, so swap those with the stiffer ones. You may not get them all perfect, but having just one stiff tuner nut is better than having three.
Glad to hear they work well! I'll have to check out the grovers from pitbull, I didn't even know about them!
Yeah I did do that, but found any tuners that were stiff were like that for any nut I tried. A pretty minor inconvenience I suppose but made keeping things straight tougher than it should have been.
I seriously cannot recommend highly enough the grover minis and the bone nuts available as addons to kit purchases.
I bought those others because i seem to have every one of my guitars with mini grovers - i just wanted a different tuning peg[emoji23].
But the grovers are much better. They are discounted as addons to kits so great value IMHO.

Took a look, annoyed at myself for not getting them! I put a bone nut in today.
If only pitbull sold kluson style 3x3 black locking tuners I'd get some for my epiphone. My favourite guitar to play but stays in tune worse than me at 5 pint karaoke night.
It won't be the Epiphone tuners, it will almost certainly be the nut. If you haven't got nut files, I'd really recommend you get some. Certainly a reasonable investment, but having a properly cut nut, along with a good set-up can turn a so-so guitar into one that plays and stays in tune. Plus you can then set up all your guitars better, and charge a small fee to set up your friends' guitars as well to help recoup some of the outlay.
