Waz, that may work, I use the same technique myself. Go back a few grades to enable the stain to penetrate then slowly and carefully use higher grades as I build up the colour

Had a look at the stain today and decided that it is a bit better, have a look at the new pics' and see if you think it may be.
I'm sure it well be ok after a few more coats and see what it looks like
Rick.
looking better Rick, the flash photos probably make it look a bit lighter in colour than it is.
Keep applying coats
Looking much better.

A nice day today, so thought I'd take some pics in natural light. I think it looks better the next day than straight after the stain coat.
The back is not as good as the front, but the front has had an extra coat. Tomorrow it will get another stain, and try to get the sides to take a bit more in.
Well look at that could load five pics', hope they are big enough.
Saw on a thread a while back where a guy went to Officeworks and bought Blue ink pad refill ink and from memory think he diluted it in water and applied that as a stain. End result looked good and was not as washed out looking. Still think the surface might be too smooth and shiny to take a stain as I am having similar problems with a maple neck that is super smooth. Too far gone for me though and just loading the neck up with multiple stain coats and hope the intensifier adds more depth once applied.
getting there Rick, apply a few more coats till the bottle runs out. Headstock is looking pretty deep in colour.
I had the same trouble on a basswood ST-1 took quite a few coats to get some depth in the colour
WooHoo! finally, well at least I can see it will be acceptable to me (if that means much) the front is looking great and the back is ok.
Still have enough to give it another 2 coats (maybe) so I am Happy. However, before I get too carried away I'll see what the pictures look like when I take them to post. I think it looks better in real life than on a computer screen. (uuummm, although I don't have my glasses on).
The sides still are "patchy" on the curves, don't know why this is but it may turn out ok though.
Pics in about 3 days, next coat on about the 4th - 5th.
Here's hoping. I think it has to do with the Basswood as I did an off cut from the head stock and it is good even after the first coat.
Rick.
