Actually, it isnt a member of the Acer (Maple) family.
Bit hard to tell untill you sand it, but my guess is that chunk of tasty tree is probably Flindersia pimenteliana (common name Maple Silkwood or Rose Silkwood.
The most likely possibility is Flindersia brayleyana (common name QLD maple or maple silkwood).
There are 17 trees in the Flindersia family, all are native to the Moluccan, New Guinea and Australia regions.
