often one will work, but two will get it off for sure and gives a more even push

Just kidding.. I use my trusty multi fit guitar tech spanner and a chunk of felt..

Here's a method that works for me, what you do is find a piece of 1mm thick cardboard roughly 2 inches by two inches, next get a steel ruler (one used to mark out sheet metal), next use the cardboard to protect the finish on the guitar while you use the steel ruler to gradually lever the pot knob off the shaft while rotating the knob, eventually the knob should come off the pot.
Note: Make sure you have loosened any grub screws beforehand.
