You really need (IMO) to get a full set of micromesh, rather than just one sheet, as the benefit is being able to go up the grits.

They last quite a long time, so I tend to buy a new set every other year with my usage. They are the final polishing stages, so your normal sandpapers do all the heavy lifting and wear.
I am sure you are right. I am just trying to limit purchases. I was hoping I could sand up to 1200, then use the micro-mesh followed by the synthetic 0000 steel wool pad.Quote:

That set that Simon linked is the same as I have.
Mine came as a kit with 9 sheets, foam block and Micro-Gloss Polish. I bought it about 7 years ago and have only replaced a few of the lower grade sheets since. The old ones still work pretty well though and I keep them for other jobs.
I don't think I've ever gone beyond the 6000, and tbh, probably could stop at 4000 without a very noticeable difference.
Sigh, I just bought a 9 piece, 1500 to 12000 set for $23 (free postage). Should do me for a while. Probably would have been helpful on the polished metal enclosure for the phaser as well. Oh well, that's beyond polishing now that the decal is on.
With all this outlay on tools, I really need to build at least 5 guitars to get value for money!
Whereas I find that for getting a polish on paint or plastic, it's the 8000 and 12000 that really get things shiny. Less so for frets, but I like to know that the frets are as smooth as I can get them (especially when followed by metal polish).Quote:

You need to get a construction line going, so that you've always got another kit to be working on whilst you're waiting for paint/finish on the previous one to dry.
