Yes Simon, everything fits in perfectly.

Good! On the ES-1 kit I was looking at for someone else, the pickup cavities were a bit undersized and I had to enlarge them to get the pickups moving freely without snagging the sides. And now I've just remembered that the routs in your SG were oversized, so you've probably got loads of room. D'oh!
I like the logo, matches the overall theme of this guitar. Almost at the finish line!
Jerry Garcia....nice!
After months of pain and a final op im back on track. Hernia in the groin....think of being kicked in the family jewels kind of pain...Hey, welcome to old age!!
WOW ive missed so much on the forum..
Its 2 weeks after the op and im finally able to sit down and do some more on the guitar.
When the pickguard was screwed down the 2 thin ends sat a bit away from the guitar face so ive set in 2 tiny magnets to help hold it down.
I used toothpicks in the screw holes to set it in place before i traced an outline on the tape and drilled the holes for the magnets. Now just need to glue one each to the back of the pickguard..

Ive been waiting on some copper foil from china the local store wanted to much money for it. They wanted $24:95 for 50ml x1mtr, i got it from china for $9 and free postage for 50ml x 30 mtrs! No wonder we shop online....

Next comes out my dodgy magnifier for all my close up wiring (another sign of old age) and DAMN are those switches fiddley!
Attachment 16833 Attachment 16834 Attachment 16835
ive set all the switches in polystyrene for easier workability but realised they are a mirror reverse and have to work out the wiring diagram accordingly.
Still on the wiring, ive printed a black and white copy of my coloured wiring diagram and colour in the wiring as i do it so i dont make any mistakes, and also written on the poly the pot positions.
Attachment 16836 Attachment 16837
I got an old piece of lan wire, stripped it and used the thin coloured core wire for the earth as it was green and doesnt need to be very thick.
Attachment 16838 Attachment 16839
NEXT a big boo boo...... didnt like the finish on the cap so tried a matt finish... looked ok
Attachment 16840
but didnt take......
Attachment 16841
Back to the drawing board...stripped it back and recoated with satin poly...Ya live and learn.

nice fix Nitro and glad you are better after the operation.
Must be a headache the wiring.
Anyway on the home straight now !
Nitro - really glad you are back in one piece!
If you had arranged so that the two magnets had opposite poles pointing upwards, then you could have stuck on a thin steel strip rather than more magnets. Or simply use two small steel inserts rather than more magnets.
As Woks said, you're almost there!
so while ive been laid up at home i finished the copper insulation to the cavities and the back of the pickguard and control plate cover.
Attachment 17166 Attachment 17167
i next used Simons advice and glued 2 small bits of metal to the ends of the pickguard for the magnets. I used an old scalpel blade cut in two.
Attachment 17168
i next finished all the wiring and tested it and it works fine.
Attachment 17169
Next i fitted all the knobs and strung it up with some old strings i had to check again for alignment.
Attachment 17170
THATS WHEN I NOTICED........These pics say it all... Back to the drawing board.
Can you pick the mistake.......
This one..
Attachment 17171
Then maybe this one...
Attachment 17172
Youll definitely see it on these ones.

Its not that the pickup holes on the pickguard were cut crooked, they weren't, i just didn't line them up when i cut out the rest of the pickguard. If i slide the pickguard over about 10-15ml then they line up perfectly.
So back online to ebay, and another pickguard is being delivered. You live and learn.
The upside, the pickups sound awesome!!
So this is how the guitar is looking at the moment and how it should look for the pickups to line up properly.
Attachment 17175
Oh I would have said bad words. At least you know its all Pickguard and not routs.
looking awesome Nitro other than the pups not lining up. Looks like the pickguard shape isn't entirely centred and you presumed the middle of the pickguard they would line up.
Oh well as you say lesson learnt.
So the pups sound great with the poles not lined up with the strings, that's a good sign !
Awwwww. What a shame! But at least it's just a pickguard. I'd leave the pickup cut-outs until last this time. Do the shape so that it fits the guitar, screw it on, then mark out the cavity locations so you can be sure they are centred.
That's great! Well done and congratulations for whenever the anniversary is.
Damn man, well we've all learned from similar experiences. If you dont go out on a limb you never learn. Hope you save it.
You right there mate, i dont mind the mistakes as long as there is a fix for it and all this mistake cost me is $19au so i regard it as good experience. I just hate the wait for new parts, here in the country it takes weeks.
In the mean time im sussing out my next guitars im gonna modify. Think im gonna do 2 tribute guitars when i sort out all the kinks. lol
Hi guys, im nearly there, pickguard all done, switches in, wiring done, pickups sitting straight. BUT... i think my graphite nut is sitting too high, could someone check these pictures for me....cheers.. im not sure how high the string should be, though i like a fairly low action...Thanks in advance again guys

Hey Nitro, depends how deep the string slots are but it looks too high still.
Put the strings on, tune up and that will give you a better idea how far you have to push the strings down on the 1st fret.
there's a nut height tutorial somewhere on the forum
If you've got proper nut files, then filing the slots (and then filing the top of the nut down) is always preferable and more accurate. Without nut files, then file the underside.
You can normally file the slots on a bass guitar using needle files and a bit of care, but the thinner slots on guitar nuts need the right files.
Did some more pics of the neck strung with the high e string, the string depth, height from string to fretboard, and string to fret.

these are my nut files @simonbardon
Attachment 17671
That's very high. Definitely needs to be lower. It's the height over the 1st fret that matters and should certainly be less than 0.5mm, StewMac reckon on a clearance of about 0.15mm to 0.38mm from top E to bottom E. But you really need to check with all the strings on and up to tension. You can use feeler gauges to guide you.
http://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online...lot_Depth.html
But with that much slot to cut, I'd suggest filing the bottom of the nut first to take nearly 1.5mm off, then use the files to lower the slot depth from there, as they look pretty lightweight in the photo and look more suitable for fine work. But do the slot filing in-situ with the neck strung up and just the string on the slot in question loosened and pushed to one side. The string tension will pull the neck upwards, so if you try and slot it with no tension you'll end up with a bigger gap than necessary.
If done correctly, then you should hardly use any finger pressure to fret a string at the first fret. Obviously, loo low and you'll get buzzing, so it's a fine line.
At last.....It was worth it, im stoked, an original that no one in the world has!!!
Thanks Guys for all your help, to whom this would not be possible...you know who you are.
I was cheeky and posted it in GOTM APRIL. Nothing to lose, and some good advice for my next one...

Looks brilliant Nitro! Is the logo a sticker or actual inlay?
