Hi all.Looking at starting these kits and need some advice.I will be fully chroming the body (dont ask how lol, special technique lol )and im am wondering the following. In your opinion which would look better. The most popular i will pick. Now picture the ST body fully chromed with the black pearl pick guard and gold fittings.Or chrome with black pearl and black fittings, chrome with red pearl and gold fittings or chrome with red pearl and black fittings.Which do you think would look best.Need to know before i order, but that will be a week away so off you go.Cheers all!

Cool. Chrome is rad. Personally I think mixing chrome and gold would look gaudy as hell. Then again, if you are chrome plating a guitar is gaudy something you're worried about?
-
5 litre Calais - Love the idea - personally though I'm a simple bloke - so think if you're going chrome - aim for look of the guitar above - as such would be chasing down a chrome pickguard (gold or silver)...
-
I do like the "Satch" chrome look - I did try to do this once and I used a Chrome spray pack..... looked good until I tried to do some clear over it and then it turned grey !! YUCK !!!..... I think the Chrome and black would be the right combo.
-
I'm building a chrome ST-1 kit Calais and hoping I won't have Trevor's problem when I clear it !
Think you would have to chrome plate it to get the look of the Satch axe pic.
I personally think black pickguard and hardware would be the way to go. I'm using a silver mirror pickguard and chrome hardware to keep the theme
-
Y your using chrome paint and wish to clear ir you need to use a special paint or it will just peel off and yeah will turn grey. But im thinking the chrome and black too as the chrome will be the main focus and gold might just make it clash.but still thinking.
-
any idea what sort of clear coat you need to go over chrome paint Calais? I'll do some research
-
the one i get actually comes with the chemicals i use so not quite sure, but any decent paint shop should know. All i do know is its a 2k product.I will find the chemical compound and maybe a paint shop might no straight away.
-
ok thanks Calais if you can please share any information you find out. I'm glad I didn't put a clear coat on and find out the hard way the colour goes grey !
what model is your Calais ? presuming earlier than VT being a 308
-
ok.the chemicam properties are as such,topcoat.... Xylene,n-butyl acetate and resin and the hardener contains nebutyl acetate,2-methylpropan-1-ol and resin.Hope that can help.cheers.
-
the calais use to be a vk but i dont have it anymore.now i race a tg gemini that is also my daily driver and we have a vr ss hsv enhanced.
-
whats the product called Calais ? I googled chemicam and nothing came up. Is this the colour or clear coat ?
where do you race the Gemini ?
-
sorry that was spose to say chemical lol.I rang my local paint supplier and they have a product called diamond coat top coat that goes over brass and chrome and such.should be ok with chrome paint but would have to check and do a test.not sure how much it is.chrome paint will never really look like real chrome but with a clear over it it would definately look better.
-
we race hillclimbs northern nsw.its great fun.and pretty cheap to get into comparing other motorsports.
-
Yeah up the gems! My first car was a te, blew the engine and started a na 12a conversion but ended up starting an apprenticeship and sold it all off. Still miss my one owner granny spec poo brown ticket to freedom.
-
yeah i have thought about selling her to fund this next project but i nkow i would regret it for sure lol
-
-
the purple Gemini looks cool Calais.
I did a google search and could only find a nail strengthener by that name
http://au.sallyhansen.com/nails/diam...t-dry-top-coat
would need a few bottles of this
-
-
great project, looking forward to seeing how chrome you can get it
-
This is what the chrome comes out like although im not a very good photographer

-
Sounds like highly toxic stuff.... Not sure i would be keen on using it.....
-
nah no more than normal auto paint.as long as you use breathing stuff and cover up.Its legal here in Aus so couldnt be too bad.
-
however on saying that its not a simple process. The setup fees alone are incredible,so im not trying to get anyone to look at the chroming.Just noting its what i will be doing and trying to get ideas on colors and such.:)
-
looks like it comes up pretty well
-
G'day Calais,
Loving the idea of the chrome guitar, I personally go for the chrome body with black chrome hardware and pickguard.
I've used both KBS and POR-15 products ( google is your friend ) and found the POR to be better that the reverse engineered KBS product.
I have POR-15 on my clubman race car and KBS on the trailer and also on some stuff around the house and it doesn't seem as durable
-
Hi Dave. Not sure wjat your saying but they are rust coatings from what i can see.The system that i use contains a base coat and top coat.So rust isnt and issue but will be putting about ten coats of the clear.which is a 2k product and very durable. But I cant wait to get started!!!!!Not long now lol!!!!!
-
G'day Calais,
What I was trying to say is that I find the POR product more durable and their Glisten product which I didn't mention comes up a treat.
-
Oh ok.yeah now i get it.In reference to wokkas post lol.Yeah the product does look good.just been checking it out.thanks for that Dave.
-

Look forward to you posting pics Calais, I'll hold off my clear coats till I see how yours turns out
-
Yeah i found it by accident Dingo lol.Prob still a week away wokka.placing order tonight.but will be getting straight into it.getting exited and havent slept for a week.allready have too many ideas for my next 5 guitars lol.
-
sounds good Calais, good work planning your next 5 builds !
So you ordering the ST-1 or IB-1 kit ? I still don't understand the chroming process you will be doing how it is applied ?
-
im doing the st1 for now being my first. The chroming is hard to explain but basically its pure silver trapped between to clear coats.the silver is suspended in liquid for and when acivated the silver sticks to a special basecoat and all the other stuff IE the liquid runs away.not probably theoretically correct but the easiest way to explain it.but yes it is real silver.its sprays on but not like paint (other than the basecoat and topcoat). Its the same process they use for making mirrors and has been around for years, but has been a big secret for many of those. But it isnt an easy process.Take lots of practice and im still not good yet.And everything has to be SPOT on.or it just wont work.I will try get a video of it when im spraying something. Its like magic!
-
yeah ok thanks for explaining that Calais, sounds like you better practice on some scrap wood. Would love to see a video when you spray the silver on
-
sounds cool and difficult, cant wait to see how it goes
-
shit the pressure is on now lol.oh well my first build so hopefully I dont bugger it up........but wouldnt really matter if i did right?......being my first build and all right?.....................Hhhmmm....woosaa.....wo osa...lol.It will be fine!
-
don't stress Calais, there's no pressure on you, first build and all, don't think there's too many on the forum that haven't had to sand back a body and start again !
