Hi All,
Me and my very knowledgeable friend tested out some black wattyl spain on spare pine to see how the popped grain would look like.
We sanded it back and put honey oak stain on it and doesn't look overly good...to be fair we didn't put a lot of effort in the finesse....looks like pine furniture gone mouldy.
I floated the idea of using red stain (jarrah) to pop the grain before putting honey oak on it...
Has anyone popped grain using red before putting another colour on it?

I did one Tele build some time back where I used Wattle Rosewood stain on Alder and then sanded it back and did a yellow to Blue burst... I call it my Rainbow Tele due to all the colour effects that came through.
Blue on Rosewood stain turns Purple which is the edge.... Yellow on Rosewood heads toward the Red spectrum near the bridge. And of course Yellow and Blue gives green.... So a Rainbow of sorts is what I got...lol
It was my first attempt at a burst of any kind so ultimately it still looks a bit crap... Needs more work to finish it off, Any suggestions are most welcome...

(edit) It looks like that 'tele' has a strat shaped neck.

I have used same colour with water based inks but a lot stronger concentration as a first coat then wiped off as much as possible 24 hours later with a slightly damp rag, then applied lighter slightly diluted colour over that. End result is that where darker bits remained from 1st coat come out darker once 2nd coat is applied.

Edit: Front is Flame Maple, back is Basswood and due to nature of various planks used it is really hard to POP basswood as evidenced in rear shots taken on same day...

Here are some test results.
Wattyl jarrah on, sand it back, then put honey oak on.

The second one is honey oak on top of black. Again, the sanding was a lukewarm effort but the streaks demonstrate the black underneath.
