Where does this go? Or perhaps is it just to help get the string trees on easier?

Looks like a piece of solder. I知 not sure where those go either. Electronics is not my strength.

Put the B/E tree on, then compare the string angle of the G and D strings. If they are very close to the the same as the B and E strings, then there's no point. If they are shallower, then fit the tree.

    Edit: Oops. Too late.

So I finally ordered an amp but it took a little while to arrive so I used that time to refinish the body as it was a bit patchy. It came up much better this time. I just tried to torch the grain instead of the whole body. I知 so glad I did. After re assembly the it would play thru the amp but I found I had the hot wire and ground for the jack around the wrong way. A quick re solder and it plays a treat. I知 really happy with it. Even happier to be finished. Thank you for all the input along the way.Click image for larger version.

I like the new finish job better! It's more refined (in a rustic sort of way!).

Good job on your first kit! Glad it plays well for you too.
