GST-1 second build

Hi All,

I am starting my second build which is a GST-1 kit. I first ordered the STA-1 from PBG’s, however, when it arrived it was less than ideal for me - probably fixable for someone who is a little more handy but the main issue was a small hairline crack in the neck pocket and the neck was out about 2mm from left to right once seated in the pocket. Credit to Adam who was very helpful after I emailed him with the issues and was amazing with communication.

He was kind enough to send me a GST-1 as a replacement. I requested the model with the maple finger board but when it arrived I ended up with the Jatoba. Not a huge concern to me so I am going to proceed with this build as is.

I have upgraded the following:

- Graph Tech
- locking tuners Grover
- pickups to the tonerider classic blues set.

I am still working through my ideas of how I will finish this but do know that I will add a mini toggle switch to enable the 7 combination wiring mode.

My first question is about the Jatoba board - do I need to finish this with any type of to coat e.g poly (similar to maple) or is it closer to rosewood with no coat required?

The two main differences are the the body construction and neck choices.

STA-1 has 4-piece Ash body with a Rosewood FB neck only.
GST-1 specifies 2-piece Ash body and gives you a choice of Maple or Jatoba FB.

and in regards to the kit that I got the “quality” was night and day. However, this is obvious a small sample size.

Great upgrade I'd say and that Jatoba looks cool!
I am always surprised to see such a big difference in quality and detail coming from the same shop.
Anyways never has been the chinese strong point and otherwise we would pay double :-).

I think you treat Jatoba like rosewood, with oil, but I am not sure.

I would assume that there would be a whole host of issues that would contribute to the variability in kit quality. But mainly the issues with the kit that was sent where out of my skill set to fix - I am sure that most of these could have been over come by many of the forum

Progress with the kit. I have completed a mock build (not much to take photo’s of with that).

Basically am going through the process of finish sanding the body. Also took some time to sand the neck down and shape the headstock.

Overall slow progress but happy with the result so far.

Hi All,

Been considering how to finish this guitar and have decided on a fabric top. Went and had a look today at some fabric and came across this little number. This is definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but must admit that I did love a good skull design in my younger years

I like it, that will look cool. Can't wait to get back to my EX build and finish the graphics in it too.
