    wiring an explorer

    hi I'm wiring a guitar

the diagrams I've looked at and other peoples' guitars have a yelow wire for the neck pick-up and a red for the bridge. The yellow seems to be longer in all cases too, but I got a long red wire and a short black wire and now I don't know where each one fits.

The wire colours can vary between factories, kit models and batches so you can’t really rely on a specific colour being used for a particular part or connection. For pickups, the longer wire is usually for the Neck pickup (regardless of colour), so that’s a good place to start.

If you have access to a multimeter then you can test the resistance of each pickup and the bridge pickup is typically slightly higher than the neck. And, with tuneomatic style bridge kits, if the pickup rings/mounts are attached to the pickups then the taller ring should be on the bridge pup, so that’s another possible identifier.
    Scott.
