    Couple of mm (edit) both sides.

    I'd use one of these. The nice thing about these is they are self centering. Close to idiot proof, which appeals to me. Not completely idiot proof, tho, which is how I know you need to really fasten down that control plate before trying to drill out the hole so you don't turn it into a mini lawn mower.     Of course...Alps, Alpha and Gotoh pots won't require changing the control plate...
