GPB 4B - GrainPopperBass #2 Build

Howdy All!
Been busy & forgot to start the build diary...
Well, here's the body of my 2nd build well on the way. Outta the box the grain on the ash was begging to be shown off. Sanded to 180 grit.




Had my first crack at using Ebony Timbermate as a grain fill. Mixed to a thickened cream consistency & applied with a rag. It dried really quick & I tried to scrape of excess with a credit card but ended up with scratches.




I decided to just leave it messy & pay the penalty at sanding time. It came off surprisingly easy with a cork block & 180 grit. Seriously don't recommend this for those working inside their house. The dust smells terrible, even with a mask I could taste it. Final sand lightly with 240 grit.




Generously applied 1st soaker coat of Tru Oil - I nearly lost an eye when the grain popped!




I wonder how many coats Waz would do....

Ash gives up some wicked figuring with an oil finish. Looks great. 🎶🎵🎼🎸

Will start working on the neck in between the Tru Oiling today. Is there any way to show a bit of the grain on a maple headstock? Would be cool to get it to match the body, even just a little..

I wipe it flat after it's dried completely, give it a try you'll be surprised

Neck. Shaping done with jigsaw & files, still needs a final sand. I have also lucked out with some nice grain patterns in the maple.





After final sand, it's Tru Oil x all the way. Probably 3 or so on the neck itself, then a few more for the headstock.

I've been using small pieces of a $5 synthetic chamois for application. It's the most "lint free" material I have found so far & the TO just slides on, especially the final coats of my JB4 with Turps added. Smooth as (enter your preferred smooth metaphor here).

Nice shape, classic without being weird. Hard to get that balance right.
