    When opportunities present themselves...

What do you do when you've starting to build a collection of wood and an opportunity for more (more than I can probably use in the near future) pops up.

Well you jump on it of course.

Got hold of some Southern Silky Oak. Here it is being cut on the horizontal bandsaw.

    A piece of it.

    Another piece.

Ends sealed and stacked to let it dry. There are a mix of flat sawn and quarter sawn pieces. I'll give it probably about 12 months before I do anything with it to make sure it's had ample time to dry.

    Looks great.

How heavy and hard is it?

I have been looking at various timbers trying to figure out what might be lightweight but also strong as a lot of hardwood is also quite heavy and very strong too.

Difficult to say as it is wet but here are the comparisons with Honduras Mahogany (taken from www.wood-database.com).

    Density
    Southern Silky Oak - 590 kg/m3 dry
    Honduras Mahogany - 590 kg/m3 dry

    Hardness
    Silky - 3,930N
    Mahogany - 4,020N

I got it for back and sides for an acoustic scratch build. But because I have plenty I'll be able to do some sort of electric out of it as well.
