Angry Tips on installing pickups needed

Before I try something irreversible, I'm hoping there is a better way. My EX-5 pick ups have four screw holes, one in each corner. I assume that the springs go on the underside of the pick up. How do you do that? The spring is longer than the screw, so when I attempt to place the pick up in the hole I can't get the spring/screws to line up in order to fasten them in.

I think what I'm going to do is drill a shallow hold for the spring to sit in while I set the pickup.

Never built one of these , but it looks like the pickups hard mount into the cavities. Yes the spring goes on the screw and under the pickup, they will need to be compressed a bit - they will hold tension on the pickupto hold it at the correct height when set.
Tricky to set up - one way would be to drill the pickup mounting holes for those 4 screws. Hold the pickup above , with the screws in, pointing down. Then it is a juggle of spring and screw placement. You could drill a shallow oversized hole at the screw holes, just deep enough to hold a screw upright and then lower the pickup, with is screws over the springs, compress and screw down.... all the best

I gave up trying to get the springs on my EX 4 I used high density black foam under my PU to help with height adjustment. Good for vibration too

Best suggestion however if wanting to use springs I would place pickups in the holes and start the screws without springs first to create a female thread in the timber. Once you have about 5 mm to 10 mm depth on all 4 screws (actually 8 when adding up both pickups) unscrew them all, insert springs under pickups, push pickup down, start screwing down the screws. Pretty simple process but would also add the high density foam too as it has more 'spring' action than the flimsy springs.

    Cheers, Waz
