Overdrive, and animals of that nature...

Okay, my building has taken a back seat ... because life. But that means I'm playing more. Both my buys and builds.

Its particularly fun when the handbrake goes out cos the JVM210 gets a room shaking run. However while she is home it's headphones on the VOX VT40X typically in AC30TB emulation mode... Same pedal board used on both amps... And that's okay... almost.

In my signal path there is a RAT, a TS9, a Big Muff and a Klon clone... And therein lye's my problem. The Klon driven by humbuckers into the VOX on a set of headphones sounds so ... I want to say cool yet it's also so evil, so growely, so spine tingling nasty. Through the JVM on Drive/Green (JCM800 mode) it's immersive. On some power chords while I played I got serious shivers up/down my spine. Though most HB equipped guitars will do the job I do have a partscaster Alder Strat with SD rails that is particularly killer on these pedal/amp combinations...

So my question is.... What combinations of OD gear do you guys/gals use on power chords to make your listeners stop stunned and say "Wow !!"

My pedal boards are pretty complex because they're set up to handle three different guitars plugged in at the same time (acoustic and two electrics - 2 of which can be used at the same time), with three different outputs (to acoustic channel on PA, to organ channel on PA, and to amp - all three outputs can be used simultaneously).

But the drive side of things is pretty straightforward, a Boss SD1 into an old Yamaha, into a semi-clean-ish channel on my Peavey Valveking 112. The Yamaha just gives a bit of grit and level for choruses or more dirty parts, the Boss really kicks it up for my very rare solos but more regular park-it-on-the-edge-of-feedback-on-the-outro-of-the-song moments.

Back in the 80's i used a Boss OD1 through a non master volume JMP Super Bass 100w head when playing guitar and that was the best overdive i have ever used. Very simple with just level and overdrive knobs.
These days i am using a Xvive golden brownie that can produce those JCM800 tones through my Vox VT40 and is much better than any of the inbuilt amp options.

I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that you get a dirt pedal and if you find a sound you like it sticks to you like glue. You can't shake it off easily.

Have to laugh at this too.... All my dirt pedals are reasonably famous/popular,RAT, TS9 yada yada ... A cursory glance at my board has the dirt settings on all pedals at about 11 o'clock... One could wonder why that is so...lol

Yeah... in my pomp, it was an OD1 - on a Boss BCB 6 - straight into a Holden 100w combo; no FX loop on that old girl! Later on I got a Boss HM2, which was an odd pedal - it needed to be wound wide open to sound good. Because of the OD1 being so good I had no need to try any other distortion/overdrive so haven't experienced anything else!!
These days I use an old ME3 which can dial up all sorts of weird graunchy noises....

I gave my Klon clone a run into my JVM210c with my partscaster SD rails strat build ... Hooked up a pair of SM57's into the interface, set some levels and hit record in Audacity.... Pretty basic, but it got the job done....

Coming off PC speakers is no where near as good as it did the JVM giving me and the walls a good shake when I recorded it... Just sayin...

I'm rather taken with the Coloursound Power booster/overdriver.

Its one of the first ever overdrive pedals (yes fuzzes had been around for a while prior). Hi and Lo knobs actively boost and cut, and the gain knob does something a bit special. Towards the end of its range we transition from overdrive to fuzz.

"That Pedal Show" dedicated an episode to it which demonstrates it in all its glory. They show you what it can do into a high headroom amp from around 17:00-27:00. Its an hour long video, so probably just check out that 10min segment if you're interested and short on time.

I was particularly blown away with the short demo at the 25min mark showing what can be done with it switched on and just altering pick attack and the volume pot on the guitar.

BYOC sells an affordable clone kit of this pedal, and I think I might just have to get one.

I'm running a Kink - Trem-n-dous Gain and Charlie Fuzz pedals. They go hard, at times too hard for my pussy little Roland micro Cube but the are fun, never the less.
(Just don't make the mistake of accidentally hitting the go button on the Gain when you are lazily riffing jazz style with your arch top...)
