Newbie from Long Island!....Started my 1st build!

    Hi Everyone,
Frank here! I've been wanting to build a guitar for the longest time, and just recently started to make my first. I decided to make an SG style. I have an extensive background in woodworking, but unfortunately I have never picked up a guitar in my life, so I do not play. I simply choose to make one because I thought it would be a challenging project......and the little research I've done is telling me I'm correct - lol. Anyway, I'm hoping to get some good advice here and also get good building tips and techniques. While I do not have any specialized guitar making tools, I do have what you would expect in an average woodworking shop. So far I'm most of the way into the body of the guitar, but I do know the majority of the work is in the neck and fretboard. The attached pic shows the body so far.....made with a couple of pieces of burl surrounded by epoxy resin (still rough sanded until I'm done with all the cavities, of course). I also cutout a cavity for the neck and partial cavity for the pickups. Looking forward to digging into these posts! Any feedback based on the pic would be great!

    Thanks,
    Frank

Welcome Frank, there are lots of helpful people on this site so I’m sure you’ll get lots of tips.
That’s an interesting guitar body you’ve got there. It’ll look awesome when finished.

That's a spectacular looking body in the making Frank! Welcome to the forum!

What wood is the burl you have used?

Nice, from what I know of it, it' supposed to be hard and heavy and death on tool edges. Looks lovely, how hard was it to work?

It wasn't too bad. The pieces I had were too thick, so I was able to plane them down with a router sled. After that I was able to pour the resin to the right height and get my slab done. Also had no problem routing the edge using a template.

Loving where this is going. Looks like a couple of volcanic islands in tropical ocean.

    Super cool!
What is the material "between the wood pieces"? The "epoxy", I mean, where, how, did you buy it?
What is the weight of the SG –body part?
    Looks good!

Yes, the blue part is poured epoxy. I bought the (clear) 2 part epoxy on ebay and added some vibrant blue mica powder to it (also purchased on ebay).
Regarding the weight - the body itself is around 6.25 lbs.....I thought it would be a lot heavier as well, but it's actually perfect.
