    Bass machine head upgrades

Throw this one to the brains trust, I have a Hofner shorty bass and the tuners on it are rubbish. I am looking to get replacements or reuse some spares I have. Is there any reason you can't use tuners from an acoustic guitar? Do bass ones have a 'stronger' action to stay in tune?
I have some Grovner tuners that came off an acoustic, that with some drilling out of post holes look like they will do the job. Thoughts? Pics below

A couple of things that come to mind are the size of the holes that house the string. They may need to be widened to accommodate the thicker bass strings. Also the gear ratio may mean that you wind on more string but with less result.

Yeah, I thought gear ratio would be the biggest deal breaker.

These Gotoh's or something similar would be the way to go.... https://www.realparts.com.au/tuning-...de-chrome.html

Thanks for the input gents. The hole size are the same so no issue there. I like the Gotoh's but the post diameter is nearly twice what is there now. The head stock is tiny so i think it would take up too much real estate. Considering how often bass players change strings maybe i can live with it if that is the main difference

Gearing ratio is important when trying to keep the bass in tune. Cheaper tuners are prone to slippage or stiffness, or both hence why it is a good idea to invest in a decent set on a bass as the load is greater than on a guitar.
Acknowledge elephant ear style ones are too big and ugly for a Hoffner shape but there are smaller ones out there, just not sure on the diameter that goes through headstock. From memory all my elephant ear upgrades were slightly bigger and simply sanded that out so that newbies were a tight fit.
