This is a string through instrument. As you can see the strings are cutting quite badly into the wood. Does anyone with inside knowledge on guitar ferrules know the minimum string spacing you can get away with when installing ferrules? I don’t want to change the current string spacing if I can get away with it.

You might be better off examining the spacing and custom making insert pieces in stainless or brass or similar.
I think given the spacing you might struggle with standard ferrules.

That’s not what I wanted to hear. I do have some brass lying around but I think colour matching to the tuners should be attempted. So.... you are suggesting a small plate with holes drill at the current string spacing and routed level with the body. What about the back? Same again with a thicker piece of metal? I will have to run it past the owner before attempting that approach.

Yeah that’s about the size of it DM, you might get lucky with some real small top ferrules online, but the rear ones will still be an issue as I don’t think you’ve the space between strings for standard ones.
You could also do it as a single insert in a contrasting hardwood, router completely through like an upside down T cross section, with the wider end in the back counter bored to take the string ball ends. Doing it that way would also mean that you could replace it again in future if needs be.

What about some fine brass (or other metal) tubing - make your own ferrules- not sure where you'd get it from, but I'm sure you could find something somewhere.

Nice idea. I’ll see if I can find something in a matching chrome colour.

I seem to remember a guy on YouTube making string ferrules out of modified pop rivets . You can get them in various sizes. I'll see if I can find the vids. Or something like eyelets could be modified as well.

I was thinking you could just use ferrules that are used on the front of some string through guitars. They are pretty small.
