Thread: The Deluxester Prototype - Sonic's foray into repeatable scratch builds

I personally kind of like just the white finish. A blank slate for the customer to either enjoy as is or go to town on decals.

You could keep it white and provide a (cost option) pack of stick-on vinyl decals so buyers can customise to their taste.

Heh, well that's always on the cards Woltz. Second coat of white on this morning. I think I like it, plus my impatience is telling me that solid white will be the quickest path to getting it finished.

Dry enough to touch so quick mock.. yeah I'm leaving it white. Probably enough on there to cut and polish, but I think I'll grab another can and do a third pass just to be sure.

Sigh. Started cutting and polishing this morning. Was going well, first pass of cutting compound down:

Then I noticed this. Bit hard to see, but I've cut thru to the primer on the corner there. Dang it. Too cold and windy to do another respray.. so looks like another week at least until assembly.

    Bummer Sonic!
I'm glad I have all my painting done for season (at least I hope I do!). Still have cutting & polishing to do and hopefully there'll be no sand-throughs. Both bodies have plenty of clear on them so should be fine (insert fingers crossed emoji here)

It's bloody cold & windy here today too. A "feels like" of 11!
I have three guitars in for set-up & repair and I'm not even venturing out to the shed to work on them. I could put the heater on in there, but I just be arsed today. Hopefully it warms up at least a little bit during the week.

Yeah this killed my motivation for the day. Looks to be clear enough weather coming during the week for a touch up. Had a bit of a pipe dream of having it together this weekend... oh welll...

I did the same on my EX-1. That's still waiting for more coats of white paint. My spray mask for this year has arrived, so once I've finished the staining and neck gluing on the SGs and the ES-1, I'll be running up the compressor and getting the spray guns out. I may end up finishing 5 guitars at the same time!

Wow Simon, talk about multi tasking!

Looks good in white Sonic, but can't help feeling it needs a hemi orange stripe

While I'm watching paint dry I've been fiddling around with some other projects including some refrets. I've just been tapping them in with a mallet, which works OK, but obviously a caul to go in the drill press would be a better idea.

Drawing on my scottish ancestry and history of Valiant ownership, I have been resisting purchasing one and decided to have a go at modeling and 3D printing one. Here is my first prototype. The groove for the fret probably needs to be fractionally wider, but I think it'll work. I have a heap of fret wire arriving on Friday so I'll test it out on the weekend.

Another re-radius of a fret board on a different pitbull neck I have here, again you can see the radius is a bit average, but this neck played really well. People do tend to think of electric guitars being pretty precision, but this really illustrates what you can get away with.

This is the neck I put on that squire I've been messing around with. I'm going to make up one of my offset shapes to suit it and do a 1 pickup, 1 vol knob super simple build with it.
