Finally have all the imperfections in the wood filled! I did break through the stain during a knock back and had to take off all the poly again, so this is the first of the fresh stain/poly, so you can see the wood pores, but it's going to work now finally.

Really need to get onto the neck.......

I'm a bit late to the party here, but anyway...

Nice to see the progress Sonic. I admire your leap of faith and you're miles ahead of me with scratch building!

I've read through from the first post and the one thing I thought I could help you with is the thicknessing.
Presuming you haven't sorted it out already (that part of the build was a few months ago now). If you have a drill press, get yourself one of these: Safety Planer.
It's a knock-off of the Stew-Mac one that costs nearly double to get to Oz (exchange rate/shipping etc).

I bought one a couple months ago and it's been *very* handy. 60 bucks + 15 for express shipping. Ordered mine Tuesday afternoon, at my door Wednesday morning. (to QLD)

FWIW, I also use my drill press for some routing jobs. I just put a router bit in it. It has enough rpm's to neat, precise work. (note: I've made rectangular wooden work table that mounts to the round metal one)

Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming!

    Hmm. Interesting. Cheers.

I've been holding off on a drill press as I wanted to get one with a decent distance from the chuck to the post. However, with current re-evaluation of project funds I'm probably going to get a smaller one and modify the design to work with it.

    Hey Sonic,

Excuse if this is 'suck eggs' terrtiory, but if you lack a drill press, but have a plunge router, you could build a cheap router sled for thicknessing. I've seen quite a few people on YouTube using them to flatten and thickness timber.

Yeah that’s how I thicknessed this one, I used a fairly agricultural setup, but it worked fine.

I hear ya. I upgraded mine a few months ago and budget was definitely a factor.
I ended up getting one with a 162.5mm throat depth (325mm swing) which has so far accommodated everything I've needed to do.

    This is what I got.

My old GMC wasn't deep enough to allow doing all 6 string through holes or 6 vintage vibrato mounting holes.
The new one is just big enough. In hindsight, the 360mm swing may have been a better choice, but I'm still happy with what I got. (and I got a good deal on it too)

    I got this one https://www.carbatec.com.au/drilling...d-code-rdp-116

Set up is quite easy, though there is a fair degree of flex in the post. That’s only really an issue if you are pushing heavy mortising chisels through hard wood. For hogging out and string through holes it is well suited.

i also bought one of these to go with it https://www.carbatec.com.au/drilling...9kg-69-44-7-cm

which provides a great extended base to the standard round table.

i highly recommend both, separately or as a unit.

Those Trademaster ones was what I was looking at, but I think I'll go for something significantly smaller at this stage.

The next month or so is going to be extremely quiet this end as I'm away for the majority of it. Then hopefully after the mid year dust settles and taxes are done I can have another run at it.

    That's the shizzle FrankenWashie!

That could be my *next* drill press upgrade (who knows that'll be though).
I can't imagine there's any job you couldn't do with that.

Yours looks suspiciously like my Trademaster as far as basic colour and component design. Wouldn't be surprised if they came out of the same factory (like so many import guitars!)

How stable is it the pedestal base? Those always look so top-heavy to me. One reason I went for a benchtop one.

I may need to have a talk to those dudes and see if they have spare parts if the post is the same diameter.

There was one exactly the same as mine for $50.00 on Gumtree it sold immediately it went up but I missed it by a couple of hours
