Slash....not all of his songs have Eb tuning

Eldest son living in NZ came over during the week as he shouted me a ticket to go and see Slash with Miles Kennedy and the Conspirators with him 2 nights ago at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Great Xmas present.

The gig was overall quite good with support act being a Kiwi Heavy metal band called Devil Skin that features a female singer who does all the low gravelly death metal growling too. Took us a while to figure that bit out at first. I must admit that they were a bit underwhelming live as having seen and heard them previously on YouTube their live sound had way too much kick drum and bass guitar in the mix, almost to the point of drowning out the vocals with lead guitar solos barely audible. I reckon the sound guy must have been a drummer or bass player in a former life. Thankfully they only had a 45 minute set.

Didn't have to wait too long before main act had the whole plus pumping. Can't remember the set list and there were a few unfamiliar ones sprinkled in with better known stuff. For those who want to know set list it can be easily found online.

As is often the case at live gigs there are many guitar changes and sometimes you wonder why and at other times it is a bit more obvious, like when Slash donned his black Gibson 6/12 double necker to play a song that required 12 string parts. It was only when at home last night trying to work out some of the songs things became a bit more obvious......Not all songs played by Slash have Eb tuning!!!!!

Eldest son Mitch had dragged out my EX1 whilst I was at work and had almost nailed Anastasia and a couple of others but when we tried to do Ghosts it didn't sound right which is when the Bass player in me realised it had to be in standard E tuning. Sure enough, we tuned up that half step and it worked. A few days earlier on the Australia Day long weekend we had been noodling and jamming to some other Slash songs and also remembered that a few of them were also in standard E tuning too. Just thought this was worth sharing as I reckon most folks would have thought everything was half step down to Eb......if it doesn't look, feel or sound right, maybe you are in the wrong position and/or sometimes wrong tuning could be playing a part too.

Back to the gig....Myles Kennedy didn't miss a single note and sang all but a couple of songs where the Bass player had a go with most memorable one being the Iggy Pop sung one called 'We're all gonna die' which sounded great. Slightly disappointed with the mix as Bass guitar was probably 10% too much and Rhythm guitarist could hardly be heard, so much so that Mitch and I reckoned we could have done as good a job, Ha, Ha! Gotta wonder how you can score a job like that?

Slash always puts on a good show, whether with Gunners or in one of these lineups. Strangely the only Gunners song I recognised was Night Train which surprised me as there were plenty of better ones to choose from. On the night my favourites were Ghosts, Bent to Fly, Wicked Stone, By the Sword, Anastasia, and the latest single.

Here is a link to the local media concert review and reckon if you get the chance to see him on this tour you will not be disappointed and rate it 9/10.... http://scenestr.com.au/music/slash-f...entre-20190131

Absolutely awesome show in Melbs tonight. Heard a bit of Phil Collins too, walking up to the gig. He was playing over the road.

I think the whole E-flat thing came from Axl Rose and his vocal range in GnR. Not sure how many songs Slash has carried this over to his solo stuff as he has worked so with many different singers post GnR. But this is a great pickup Waz

Sound was on point tonight and the while band nailed it. Anastasia was probably the highlight for sure. Only GNR song they played was Night Train. Sounds like they played a similar set as they did the same Iggy Pop cover with bass player Todd Kerns getting up on vocals.

4th time seeing Slash live now and man he never disappoints.

Never seen Slash live. A friend of mine from the St. Louis area, Bobby Schneck, played with Slash a few years back. He's also a guitar tech for Aerosmith and some of Steven Tyler's projects. Great guy, and fantastic with a guitar.

Edit: No idea why it won't show the picture or let me increase the size. Wierd.

I have a always wondered why so many yankees tune down to Eb and in relation to Slash alternating probably has more to do with needing some open root notes that might otherwise have required a capo.
Lots of stuff out there advocating why Eb on 24.75" scale with 10-42's sounds best. Definitely easier to bend notes when tuned a half step down, plus also a slightly deeper tone, but not as dark as drop D.

I think there are quite a few reasons that different people tune down. I'm sure tone is right up there on the list. For me, though, and most of the cover band musicians I know, it's just easier to sing most songs when you bring them a bit closer to the mortal human vocal range.

Looks like you were closer to the stage than us. Were you in a standing only section?
