Waiting for the kit to be officially given an import cost (I rang them yesterday and they quote £77.45!!!) jeeez. Oh well can’t do anything about that but it something folks should cost into the builds.

So as I’m waiting again I’ve done some more research into the paint I want to use and spoke to a. I’ve guy called dan at Jawel paints here in the uk who are a uk distributor for house of Kolor. We discussed the use of cellulose products together with house of Kolor which is 2k based (they do have a urethane clear) and also about adding their Kandy konsentrate to the celly clear. He said it was all possible and to just make sure that any 2k had time to allow the chemicals to cure off before clearing with celly. However he did say anytning could happen and it would probably be best to stick to 2k clearcoats on top of all the layering of primer, base, flake with carrier, candy etc... I’m beginning to think that I might just bite the bullet and go with everything using 2k.

But I am going to test.

I have 3 bits of test wood. It’s just mdf but does have an oak veneer so lots of grain. Ive used a wood primer on this (celly - work on that I’ll use to seal and bury the grain) sand.

Brilliantly the HOK stuff is available in rattle cans which although not as consistent as a gun on large surfaces Are cheaper than a tonne of paint and good for testing. And it’s the exact same paint but mixed and ready. I’ve used the specialist paint versions on record boxes and they really work fantastic for small projects.

I’ve ordered 2 different base gold colours
The flake I’ll use my own as HOK is stupid expensive and I already have this lying about. I’ll put it in a flake carrier which I already have. This is 2k

Also ordered a can of root beer candy

Then I just need to get some 2k clear which I’ll probably order some for my gun from specialist paints rather than HOK

And I’ll also do a test using the celly clearcoats and see what happens. I expect it to crack.

So priming has begun on the test pieces.

My kit arrived after a few phone calls to parcel force this morning. I ended up going to collect it. Just glad it’s here. Not even opened the box yet as I’m at work and know ill get nothing done if I do.

Also my test paints arrived from HOK this morning so that’s lunchtimes job. At least get a couple of coats of base golds down.

    Happy man

I used mdf that has veneer on it to see how much would show through if I didn’t brain fill the wood. I’m not sure how this veneer is compared to the kit veneer but this is v noticeable. 6 coats of primer too. Hmmm

Anyway I’ve layed down some gold coats. 5 quick coats with 15 mins flash time. Of HOK solar and gamma gold. The gamma is this more orange coloured one.

Solar matches the gold flake more

Will be interesting to see what they look like when flaked then candied.

The rattle cans of HOK are great for testing but definitely more patchy than a gun and need building up more. I’d spray slightly wetter with a gun personally but this is fine.

Solar gold I think looks lovely! Nice shine on it.

Anyway. This is done until next week. Giving these colour coats a full weekend in the booths to dry fully.

I get to unpack the kit tonight. I think I might pee I’m so excited.

You will find that the kit has so much finer grain than your test pieces... you've got nothing to worry about.

Opened the box finally last night. Not able to do a dry build yet but just wanted to see. First impressions are... wow. I’m really happy with the neck fit fist and foremost. I know it all needs to settle but I’m happy so far.

The wood seems lovely - the top section of the sides doesn’t seem quite as nice as the bottom half (be great if I was a lefty) but on the whole I’m happy.

The gold bigsby has a bubble or two also in the finish but again. I can live with this.

    Happy.

Well I've injected some blood sweat and tears in my builds but this probably a step too far.

    cheers, Mark.

No he wasn’t serious Igor, I’m 100% sure it was a typo. Yes I’m quite sure he meant GRAIN filler.
What? No Igor, we shouldn’t just try it anyway, people will get upset and a brain is a terrible thing to waste...

Using brain filler is a well thought out process.
