That's a shame. I'd sand the headstock down to remove the paint and if there were still visible gouges, stick on a piece of veneer then paint that black. No need to go overboard, you can probably just put a few coats of paint on, sand that down and buff it up when cured without bothering with clear gloss.

Alternatively, you could try colouring the chips in with a black sharpie or paint, filling the chips with superglue until slightly proud of the headstock then sand the dry superglue back to level then polish it up. But it's probably less overall hassle to add some veneer.

Good idea Simon. Black nail polish would also work and if applied several times will increase thickness to help acting as a filler.

Lowered the action at the nut, leveled and polished the frets. Now it plays like a dream. Intonating the beast with the help of Irish whisky (care of my Dad). I may have to find a shorter bolt for the low E string as the I need to take it further back but the bolt is touching the string.

Just nip the bolt off with an angle grinder with a 1mm disk or a Drexel with an even finer disk

Up and running. Set up and playing real well. I have it tuned up to F# at the moment. I’ll give it away if I can find a 7-8 year old who really wants to play guitar. I wouldn’t charge anyone for something I found and then messed up the headstock.

Good save Fretworn! I reckon there's good karma in rescuing instruments and passing them on. (I've yet been given the opportunity to do it, but I know it will happen one day)

Regarding your earlier dilemma with the tuner holes, I use a good quality tapered reamer for that job. It takes longer, but will not hog out the finish like a drill bit will. You just need to do it from both sides of the headstock a little at a time. (because of the taper)

The extra time it takes with a reamer is surely *way* less than what you'd spend repairing the finish.

Just thought I'd chuck that out there. Good work & good on ya!

Finally found a use for this guitar. At the monthly jam I go to we are doing a Samantha Fish tune that she plays on a 4 string cigar box guitar tuned to a G power chord. So this baby is now tuned like a guitar tuned in open D but capoed at the 5th fret.

A very fitting slot for this guitar Fretty. I like the oil can guitars she plays
