thanks mate, i'm going to stop posting about the neck issue in this thread as I want this to be an overview.

Moving on, today I had a crack at doing a mock build.
Unfortunately the neck isn't sitting in well at the moment but hopefully we can address this soon!

Hi James. Yeah, move on from your neck issues for now. Straightening the neck and leveling frets would be my first priority at this point in time. Do you have the tools you need?

No, not yet.
But I've been watching a lot of Dan Thompson's videos from Guns and Guitars and reckon I'll give it a try this way.

Unfortunately, I'll need to figure out this heel/socket issue before I can move forward.

This is challenging, wow.

Okay so, sanded the neck down and its looking good. A slight 2mm gap but i'll deal with it.

I tried doing a mock build BUT the posts dont seem to fit in the holes without tape, so no chance of it going in with tape.

Either way, tried to somehow get an idea if the neck was straight but holding the bridge with one hand while the strings were in their places (this was near impossible with a bigsby, loose neck, loose strings, etc.) so I'm sort of just going with it.

Im guessing from here it might be best to drill the holes in first? that way I can mark up the body with no worries about damaging the finish? yeah or nah...



Another thing, I'm getting to the stage where I should probably check the neck with a straight edge according to the guide. I don't have one handy and I'm not sure if its worth buying one for a one off guitar build - any savvy DIY way around this?

For now, i'm going to crack open a beverage and walk away from the very small work bench I am using hahaha

NOOB QUESTION:

So I was taking off the tuning pegs and noticed these markings "R-1", "R-3", "R-4" on the back.
What does this mean?
It would make sense if it was 1-6 but there's two of each 1,3,4 and I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this.

Finally made "some progress"
Settled on a headstock design after trying a few things out by hand.
If only my year 9 design+tech teacher could see me now!
(I'm sure he'd still have plenty to scold me on)

Went for the classic fender-esque design but made it THICC so if I decide I want something more professional later there's some room to make changes

Cotton string might be an easier alternative to guitar strings if you’re just checking straightness. Perhaps you can lightly clamp the neck to hold it in position?
As for buying a straight edge tool I wouldn’t. I (and many before me) have brought a straight piece of aluminium from the big green shed, marked the fret positions and cut/filed notches. Costs you a little time but saves you money. I make most of my tools as I go along and buy the tools I can’t make.
Can’t help with your tuning machine marking, I’m curious to know what all that means now.
Nothing wrong with a classic shaped headstock. It might be an idea to hold onto your off cuts in case you wish to test a stain colour or patch a hole etc.

For taping bridge posts you need to unscrew the inner part and wrap tape around them. Ignore the bigsby for now. Cotton or fishing line work best for initial mock build as well as lightly clamping neck in position.
Mostly trying to see if neck is positioned in about the right place plus checking overall 27" scale length.
