Finally get a chance to go to that big green shed for supplies and when I get back it's pissing down so I can't do any of the work I planned on doing. I have at least been able to get the scale length measuring done so I can glue it when I get a chance. Hopefully I will be able to shape my headstock and apply some stain to it tomorrow.

Finally able to get the neck glued, there was a delay on my order of glue and other various things I needed from Pitbull, took almost a full month to get across the country, no doubt the result of a certain national post services bureaucracy.

Hope to be able to give more updates soon, I'm gonna start preparing it for a finish as soon as the glue is safely dried and I have my SD SH-5 and SH-1n 59 custom set on the way from the states.

Long overdue update on this build, just haven't had time or space to work on it till now, don't worry about the rug, guys, she's an old scrapper anyway. As you can probably see there are some parts that drank up the stain and others that didn't, I don't know what kind of glue the factory that puts these kits out uses but damn is it tough stuff. I tried goof off and sanding it a bit, still couldn't remove the excess from a knot that had been filled with it or the headstock where the nut has been glued.

Looks like a basswood body? If so that looks fairly typical for a 1st stain coat and may need either 180 or 240 to rough up enough for 2nd coat to soak in.

Another long overdue update, due to not having time to work on this much. After giving the backside a good rough up with some 180 grit the second coat of stain took quite well, and is looking nice and dark. I decided to stain the front today, and it came out very vibrant, I used undiluted green Angelus leather dye, this guitar is probably going to come out looking pretty rough in comparison to some users on here, who do amazing work, though as my first build it's taught me some valuable lessons and I hope my next build will come out much nicer.

    Well that's progress!
I reckon it'll come up alright, and we all learn heaps with our first build. (usually what NOT to do!)
Once you get that binding scraped and some clear on there, it will really start to show its individual character.
I like what you did with the headstock. Looks good!

My second PBG kit build was the same model as yours. It was my first set neck build and I learnt a thing or two and I've been mucking around with this stuff for a while.

After it all dried i wasn't satisfied with the stained finish, too much inconsistency in darkness on the back and on the front the stain really accentuated the slight gap in the veneer at the bottom, and it the flame maple pattern was completely invisible in parts, so I decided to black it out at go in a different direction. I do like how the flame maple pattern is still visible on close inspection under the black paint.

However, I fear it was a bad day to paint with the aftermath of a huge dust storm rolling over from out west the last 2 days, the back will need another coat as I couldn't get a consistent spray.

Word of advice to anyone who may be thinking it, coat hangers aren't necessarily a good solution to hang your guitar from while you paint. Little bit of damage to the headstock at the very top and around the tuning peg hole under it, the lumpiness is a result of some timbermate not being quite as flat as I thought after a design carving adventure gone wrong.

I use coat hangers for mine, you do have to be careful and make sure the bend has a flat bit in it for the tuning hole to sit on.

    Great head stock shape!
