I have been plodding along with Tru Oil on the body....and the figure/grain and colour of the body has never really tickled my Bass bone.
So...this morning...80 grit...120grit...180grit...240grit....walnut timbermate....320grit....then Prooftint mahogany stain one coat.
I think that is dark enough and lets see how she dries. I like the colour much better......it will look like the back as Tru Oil soaks in.
I left the sides with a natural finish over Ebony Timbermate...see how that goes.

Looking good Ozzie.
What colour are you doing the neck? Natural to match side bits?

The neck is nearly complete...sadly it is mahogany tint on the back of the neck and the headstock....the face of the headstock is bare wood...all coated with Tru oil.
Don't think I will sand the neck down.....I actually like the feel of it as it is....don't really care about the back of the neck as only I see it.
The body on the other hand was hard to live with. Heavy guitar this one....but will look awesome I think.

I don’t know if I have posted this before....but I really am not a fan of working with binding.
In the immortal words of Adam Sandler’s Waterboy......”It be the Deebil.”
I would have been finished this Bass so long ago without this blight.....so close to heating and sanding and grinding and just rounding over the edges......this stuff eats the big pudding.
Oh well.

I hear your pain.
Easier to do a build without binding which is why i have done 5 out of 7 without the stuff.
Acknowledge it is needed on semi hollows to hide the joins, and same with maple veneered tops.
Not sure how you sort this one out. Might have a look when on a computer to see if that provokes any inspirational ideas.

Just had a look back through the photos and the binding appears to serve no purpose other than decoration as it looks like the top & sides are from the same piece of timber, therefore no need to hide any veneer joins.
As mentioned long ago, I would have sanded the crap off. Just need to decide whether you want to keep the more square edged look vs rounded over? Too many pointy extremities to get right if choosing to round over. Best way to go would be 120 grit on a cork sanding block sanding at 90 degrees to the top and back. The binding looks quite thin in places and shouldn't need to take off too much other surrounding timber. This would also help bring out any interesting end grain too.

Interesting read, my next one will have binding on it.
