I'd suggest using more than just a couple of layers of Tru-Oil over the transfer (and I'd do the whole headstock face, not just the transfer). The layers are very thin and unless you put a lot of layers on, the transfer will stand proud of the headstock face. And when sanding (or polishing) that back, the edges get extra pressure on them, so its very easy to break through to the transfer - even just when using polish and a rag.

However many layers you put on, there's always going to be a bump as it will follow the contours of the decal, so add enough layers to be sure that the surrounding area is several layers higher than the decal surface. Always be very gentle when fine sanding/polishing over the decal area.
Looking great 👍🏻
I really like the new binding
Thanks Simon, what would you normally sand/polish with once there are a few layers on. I have fine grit sandpaper or I could just go straight to the meguiars polish that I'm using on the body?
Thanks mate, as much as this kit has been a bit of a nightmare at times, the change from white binding to the pearl I'm really happy with.

Test fitted the neck again today......ah crap the neck doesn't fit in the pocket anymore. Close look at the pocket and there was primer and paint that had made its way over the edge (my shit taping job to blame). Got the sandpaper out and carefully rubbed the overflow off back to bare wood. Worked ok, a tiny little chip of paint came off at the edge of the neck pocket but it'll be covered by the pickguard. Continuing onwards!
Headstock decal applied. I'll start applying the coats of truoil tomorrow.

Couldn't resist a mock up of the body.
Still a lot of polishing to do (including removing some of my swirls from pressing a little too hard...oops) and some slight work on the pickguard. There are two chips on the body, one on the edge of the bridge pickup cavity and the other on the edge of the neck cavity. Fortunately they'll both by covered when everything is assembled so I won't bother trying to do anything with them.
