I think I read that it's for reasons related to tone. In my case I want to keep the bridge posts from pulling out, so I plan to use all four ;-)

Instead I used Simon's suggestion and drilled out some Fender Telecaster ferrules. They work fine and seem much tougher.

Looks good. Glad you could get it to work. Tuner ferrules aren't designed to take any real pressure on the edges at all.
