Shou Sugi Ban (Japanese Wood Burning Technique to preserve the wood) P Basses

This is my first attempt at Shou Sugi Ban. Quite happy with it. I prefer it than painting basses now. Looks nicer and i love the wood grain. I feel painting robs you of the natural wood grain feel and look.

That's very interesting! DO you just play the blowtorch over it until you get the desired effect? Or is it more complex than that?

It depends on the wood. Maple is a lot harder, so i have to go slower and hold the flame a bit closer. For; ash, basswood, white poplar, alder, mahogany, zebrawood and paulownia...Its pretty much the same distance and timing in the movement forward of the flame til i get the desired effect. Then once all done, i go over the bits i am not satisfied with, thats when its a bit more complex. Kinda like airbrushing with a flame and shading with fire.
