    May Guitar of the Month

    May Guitar of the Month (for Guitars and Basses finished in April 2018)

    Enter your finished guitar or bass here to be judged for the Pit Bull Guitars May 2018 Guitar of the Month.

    Please remember:

    For Guitars or Basses finished on (or before) the end of April 2018

    One guitar/bass per member per month
    It must be a Pit Bull Guitars kit (mods and upgrades acceptable)
    Guitar or Bass must be finished and playable

    We need at least 4 photos:
    · full guitar shot from the front;
    · close up of the body finish;
    · shot of the back of the guitar; and
    · close up of the headstock (please, no brand name logos)

    Please post your photos in this thread. If you are having issues posting photos on the forum, please email them to brendan (at) pitbullguitars (dot) com

    Please note: This competition is open to amateur guitar builders only. If you are making and selling guitars for profit, you are ineligible. Also while there are some stunning guitars around - you never know what the judges are looking for, so we encourage anyone who's built a Pitbull during the month to enter!

    Competition for May closes at the end of April 2018 (Perth Western Australian time).

    The sorts of things we judge on include:
    · How well have the body and neck been prepared
    · Is the choice of finish for the style of guitar appropriate
    · How well has the finish been applied
    · How well has all the hardware, pickups, etc, been installed
    · Does it have the "Wow Factor"
    · Which guitar would you make a beeline for in a guitar shop. That is, which one would you most like to take home.

    BTW - remember that the winner is invited to be a guest judge the following month!

    Thanks Waz! I checked out your build history. Some sweet axes there! I am considering a Tele next. Any advice on the upgrades? I am considering upgrading pickups and dyeing the same "aniline red" that I used for the back of the ES. The colour turned out really well.
    Cheers,
    Paul

    Nice one Paul, the gold hardware always looks good on stained timber. I think I’m looking at doing a 12 string version for my next project, if the money gods are good to me.

    Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.

    Hi Paul,

    Maybe not the best thread to start a wishlist for Tele upgrades but if I was to do another one, it all starts with which style and choice of PUP's as thinline with HB's & Bigsby takes you down a very specific path. Personally I find it hard to go past a basic Ash body and the new GTL-1B without hardware at $155 looks like a good place to start as everyone upgrades tuners, bridges, PUP's, control switches, pots & caps plus jack plate socket. For single coil traditional Tele sound the Tonerider Vintage Classics are awesome sounding and well priced too. This kit also allows you to go naked without a scratch plate so you can show off more of the Ash grain and stain colour. No binding too which is a blessing in disguise given how many others end up looking crap from stain bleed or cracks appearing.

    My very first attempt at building anything. PBA 4 Fretless finished in Dingotone Nullabour Ochre and upgraded with an EMG GZR pickup.

    cheers

    Thanks! I wanted to keep it traditional without directly copying the p bass design (fun fact - the plastic on the headstock is just the lower horn of a strat pickguard I had ready to be recycled). I may engrave the plastic if I ever get my hands on a Dremel but I'm really happy with it as is for now. It sounds great after a a good setup, it needed a minor neck shim to get the action low (probably as the kit is designed with a fretted neck in mind). The EMGS really sing and it has great sustain and smooth slides now though!
